Asians are best represented in engineering, American Indians and blacks in education, Hispanics in the social sciences, and whites in the humanities.

Note: International students and others who were neither U.S. citizens nor permanent residents were excluded from the data. Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders were included in the “other or unknown” category unless they indicated they were also Hispanic, in which case they were included in the Hispanic category. Social sciences include psychology. Life sciences include agricultural sciences/natural resources, biological/biomedical sciences, and health sciences. Physical sciences include mathematics and computer and information science. Because of rounding, percentages may not add up to 100 percent.
