Science Philanthropy Alliance Names Its First President

Marc Kastner, a physicist and former dean of science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will become the first president of the Science Philanthropy Alliance next week. The alliance is a coalition of nonprofit institutions and foundations that seeks to increase philanthropic giving for basic science by an additional $1-billion annually within five years.

Robert A. Pastoor, vice president for student life at Marietta College, in Ohio, will become president of Saint Joseph’s College, in Indiana, next week. He will succeed F. Dennis Riegelnegg, who led Saint Joseph’s from 2009 until last June. Stephen Hulbert has been serving as interim president.

Terri Givens, an associate professor of government at the University of Texas at Austin, will become provost of Menlo College, in California, in July, as well as a professor of political science there. She will succeed James J. Woolever, who has been provost since 2011. He will continue as dean of professional studies.

Craig H. Benson, chair of the departments of civil and environmental engineering and of geological engineering at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, will become dean of the University of Virginia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science on July 1. He will succeed James H. Aylor, who has led the school since 2004. Mr. Aylor will rejoin the faculty.
