Affordable Course Materials: Electronic Textbooks and Open Educational Resources, edited by Chris Diaz (American Library Association; 144 pages; $58.50 for ALA members, $65 for nonmembers). Details initiatives designed to reduce the costs of course materials at different institutions.

Dynamic Lecturing: Research-Based Strategies to Enhance Lecture Effectiveness, by Christine Harrington and Todd Zakrajsek (Stylus Publishing; 181 pages; $95 hardcover, $24.95 paperback). Defends the continuing value of the lecture as a teaching method and offers suggestions for designing different types of lectures; also discusses lecture-evaluation tools for use by department chairs, administrators, and peers.

MOOCs and Their Afterlives: Experiments in Scale and Access in Higher Education, edited by Elizabeth Losh (University of Chicago Press; 326 pages; $115 hardcover, $37.50 paperback). Includes writings by faculty members with firsthand experience in teaching and adapting the MOOC and other online forms, as well as by students who have participated in such courses and by critics of MOOCs.

The Road Ahead for America’s Colleges and Universities, by Robert B. Archibald and David H. Feldman (Oxford University Press; 278 pages; $29.95). Examines the challenges facing American higher education; argues that while the system is likely to prove resilient, especially in the form of four-year institutions for the traditional college-age population, it must do more to address problems caused by growing economic inequality.

Undocumented and in College: Students and Institutions in a Climate of National Hostility, edited by Terry-Ann Jones and Laura Nichols (Fordham University Press; 197 pages; $98 hardcover, $28 paperback). Essays that draw on a study of undocumented students at 28 Jesuit colleges, including in-depth interviews of students and faculty and staff members at six institutions.

Write Your Way In: Crafting an Unforgettable College Admissions Essay, by Rachel Toor (University of Chicago Press; 169 pages; $50 hardcover, $15 paperback). Draws on the author’s experiences as a former admissions officer at Duke University.
