States That Draw the Most Out-of-State Freshmen, 2008

The highest number of out-of-state freshmen come from bordering or nearby states, with some exceptions. California’s colleges drew 846 freshmen from Texas in 2008, and North Carolina’s drew 858 from New York.

Note: The data cover only domestic enrollments originating from the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The nearly 1,600 colleges represented are those designated to be doctorate-granting, master’s, or baccalaureate institutions by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in 2008. The recent surge in distance-learning enrollments can skew state migration trends, so private for-profit institutions with more than 1,000 new freshmen in 2008 are not included. The figures were from the most recent finalized data available when The Chronicle conducted its analysis last fall.
