After taking office in January, President Trump quickly began advancing his education agenda. So far, his administration has done the following:
- Sought to end diversity and inclusion programs and equitable hiring practices across the government and private sectors.
- Temporarily imposed a freeze on federal funding, including research grants; the pause was blocked by court orders.
- Paused review panels at the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health, a required step for approving grants; the meetings resumed in February.
- Increased immigration enforcement and opened the door to additional deportation activities on campuses.
- Threatened to deport international students who participated in pro-Palestinian protests.
- Declared that federal anti-discrimination laws only recognize “two sexes.”
- Banned transgender athletes from participating on sports teams that align with their gender identity.
Trump and his allies also support raising endowment taxes on the nation’s wealthiest colleges and dismantling, or at least significantly paring back, the Education Department.
