Transitions: Albany State U. Makes Interim President Permanent, Harvard Graduate School of Education Names First Black Female Dean

Chief executives

Appointments

Mark DeFusco, senior research associate at the Rossier School of Education’s Pullias Center for Higher Education at the University of Southern California, has been named chief executive and president of Bay State College.

L. Tiffany Evans, provost and chief academic officer at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College, has been named interim president of Henderson Community College. She will replace Kristin Williams, who is leaving to become chancellor of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System.

Marion Fedrick, interim president of Albany State University since January 12, has been named to the position permanently. She was appointed to the interim position when Art Dunning retired.

Larry Ferguson, vice president and acting chancellor for the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, will become president of Ashland Community and Technical College on October 1. He will replace Dennis Michaelis, who has served as interim president since July.

Timothy G. Lynch, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at City University of New York Queensborough Community College, will become interim president on September 1. He will replace Diane B. Call, who plans to retire.

Resignations

Jay Coogan, president of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design since 2009, plans to step down on September 14.

Ken Grafton, vice president for agricultural affairs and dean of the College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources at North Dakota State University, became interim provost on August 16.

Anita K. Krug, professor at the University of Washington School of Law, became interim vice chancellor for academic affairs on August 15.

John Omachonu, senior vice provost for academic affairs and professor of communications at Kennesaw State University, became provost a Mars Hill University on August 13.

Alan Silva, provost at St. Catherine University, has been named executive vice president and provost at Marian University.

Lisa O’Brien Enger, chief operating officer for the United Soybean Board, will become vice president for university relations at Lindenwood University on September 1.

Evan Facher, interim director of the Innovation Institute at the University of Pittsburgh, has been named to the position permanently as well as vice chancellor for innovation and entrepreneurship.

Michael A. Joseph, vice president for enrollment management at Valparaiso University, became the first vice president for enrollment management on August 13.

Linda Logan, vice president and dean of student life at Olivet College, has been named vice president and chief inclusion officer.

Jennifer M. Sauer, vice president for finance and administration at Delaware Valley University, has been named vice president of business and finance at Mary Baldwin University.

Adam Wise, associate vice president for development and alumni relations at Boston University, will become vice chancellor for university advancement at University of Massachusetts at Boston on September 4.

Tabetha Adkins, dean of the University College at Texas A&M University at Commerce, has been named associate provost for student success and founding dean of the University College at West Chester University of Pennsylvania.

Ronald C. Anderson, chair of the finance department at Temple University, has been named interim dean of the Fox School of Business.

Jen Bacon, interim dean of the College of the Arts and Humanities at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, has been named to the position permanently.

Tomiko Brown-Nagin, a professor of law at Harvard University, has been named dean of the university’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study.

Barbara L. Christe, chair of healthcare engineering technology and associate professor of engineering technology at the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, will become dean of the School of Engineering Technology at Farmingdale State College on August 20.

Susan Fournier, a marketing and management professor and senior associate dean for faculty and research at the Questrom School of Business at Boston University, will become the first female dean of the school on August 27.

Christopher Hanning, interim dean of the School of Music at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, has been named to the position permanently.

Jason Lester, dean of the School of Fine Arts at Houston Baptist University, became dean of the School of Music and Fine Arts at Palm Beach Atlantic University on July 16.

Bridget Terry Long, a professor in the Harvard University Graduate School of Education, has been named dean of the school. She is the first black woman to hold this position.

Michael P. O’Malley, chair of counseling, leadership, adult education, and school psychology at Texas State University, has been named dean of the College of Education.

Radha Pyati, chair of mathematics at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, has been named dean of the College of the Sciences and Mathematics.

Levi T. Thompson, a professor of chemical engineering at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, will become dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Delaware on October 1.

Catherine M. Wehlburg, associate provost for institutional effectiveness at Texas Christian University, has been named founding dean of the School of Sciences, Mathematics, and Education at Marymount University.

Resignations

John D. Graham, dean of the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University at Bloomington, plans to step down and return to the faculty in the summer of 2019.

Moshe Porat, dean of the Fox School of Business at Temple University, was asked to step down after a university investigation found that the school had provided falsified data to achieve higher rankings.

Retirements

Stan Carpenter, dean of the College of Education at Texas State University, plans to retire August 31.

Rifat Latifi, a professor of surgery at New York Medical College and director of surgery at Westchester Medical Center, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital and MidHudson Regional Hospital, has been named chair of surgery at the college.

Iris Rivero, an associate professor of industrial and manufacturing systems engineering at Iowa State University, has been named department head of industrial and systems engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Monique L. Akassi, an associate professor of English and chair of languages and literature at Virginia Union University, became associate provost for faculty affairs at Edward Waters College on August 6.

Peter T. Kelly, special assistant to the president and assistant dean for alumni relations in the law school at St. Thomas University, will become chief of staff to the president of Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania on August 20.

Jesse J. Perez, a professor of drama at the Juilliard School in New York, has been named director of the Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program.

Tracey Ray, assistant vice provost for institutional equity and diversity at North Carolina State University, has been named chief diversity and inclusion officer at West Chester University of Pennsylvania.

Janet Sabuco, associate chair of administration and finance in the department of internal medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine, has been named associate dean of finance and administration at the University of Arizona College of Medicine at Phoenix.

Angie Scott, admission event coordinator at Davis & Elkins College, has been named coordinator for student success.

Garett Sherman, assistant women’s basketball coach at the University of Maine at Orono, became athletic director at the University of Maine at Fort Kent on August 1.

Colonel Gerald Smith, director of the Veteran Resource and Support Center at Texas A&M University, has been named director of veteran services for the university system in addition to his original role.

Deaths

Joseph Burke, president of State University of New York College at Plattsburgh from 1974 to 1986, died on August 3. He was 86.

Robert A. Plane, president of Clarkson University from 1974 to 1985, died on August 6. He was 90. Plane also served as provost of Cornell University from 1969 to 1973 and president of Wells College from 1991 to 1995.
