Transitions: Baker U. and Paine College Name New Presidents

Appointments
Hoot Gibson, a member of the Board of Trustees for Baker University, in Kansas, has been named interim president of the university.

Nathan Long has been named president of University of Western States, in Oregon, after serving as interim president since June.

Lester McCorn, president of Clinton College, in South Carolina, has been named president of Paine College, in Georgia.

Jerry Wallace, president of Danville Community College, in Virginia, has been named president of West Virginia University Potomac State College.

Resignations
Eric Darr, president of Harrisburg University, has stepped down.

Danny Jacobs, president of Oregon Health & Science University, will step down after six years.

Leslie Pollard, president of Oakwood University, in Alabama, will step down to become assistant to the president of the North American Division of Seventh-Day Adventists.

Retirements
Karen Holbrook, regional chancellor of the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus, will retire at the end of the year.

Joseph R. Marbach, president of Georgian Court University, in New Jersey, will retire next year after 10 years leading the university.

Michael Buckles has been named provost and vice president for academic affairs at McNeese State University, after serving in the interim role since May.

Tim Crowley, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Central Missouri, has been named to the post permanently.

Patricia Price, interim provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Queens College of the City University of New York, has been named to the post permanently.

Anne-Marie Algier has been named associate vice president for university student life and dean of students at the University of Rochester after serving on an interim basis since 2023.

Bárbara Brizuela has been named dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at Tufts University, after serving as interim dean since July.

Kelly Crane, interim dean of the University of Wyoming’s College of Agriculture, Life Sciences, and Natural Resources since December 2023, has been named to the post permanently.

Gary Cuddeback, interim dean of the School of Social Work at Virginia Commonwealth University, has been named to the post permanently.

William G. Howell, a professor of American politics at the University of Chicago, has been named the inaugural dean of the School of Government and Policy at the Johns Hopkins University.

Bret Marsh, the state veterinarian for Indiana, has been named dean and hospital chief executive of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue University at West Lafayette.

Kati Migliaccio, a professor and chair of the department of agricultural and biological engineering at the University of Florida, has been named dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

Amity Noltemeyer, interim dean of the College of Education, Health, and Society at Miami University, in Ohio, has been named to the post permanently.

Erika Randall, associate dean for student success in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has been named interim dean and vice provost for undergraduate education.

Kristina Rose, associate dean for collections and content strategy at New York University, has been named interim dean of libraries.

Joan Ruelle, dean of the Carol Grotnes Belk Library at Elon University, has been named dean of libraries at Salisbury University.

Jennifer Schlueter, vice provost for academic affairs at the New School, in New York, has been named dean and director of Ohio State University at Marion.

Resignations
Lynn R. Goldman, dean of the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University, will step down in June 2025.

Hollis Robbins, dean of the College of Humanities at the University of Utah, has resigned. Wanda Pillow, a professor of gender studies and associate dean for academic affairs, has been named acting dean.

Rashid Zia, dean of the college at Brown University, will step down and return to the faculty as a professor of engineering and physics.

Retirements
Marilyn M. Helms, dean of the C. Lamar and Ann Wright School of Business at Dalton State College, in Georgia, plans to retire at the end of the fall semester.

Mary Lou Sole, dean of the College of Nursing at the University of Central Florida, will retire in summer 2025.

danah boyd, a partner researcher at Microsoft Research and the founder and president of Data & Society, has been named a professor of communication in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University.

Valentin Radutiu, principal cellist at the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, has been named a professor of cello at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music.

DEATHS
Amir Abdur-Rahim, the University of South Florida’s men’s basketball coach, died on October 24. He was 43.

James Bruce Appleberry, a former president of Northern Michigan University and Pittsburg State University, died on October 21. He was 86.

Sister Anne Clifford, who was an associate professor of theology at Duquesne University for two decades, died on October 2. She was 80.

June Frazer, a former tenured professor at Western Illinois University, died on September 25. She was 88. After retiring from teaching, she was an elected member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives from 2010 to 2016.

Everett L. Frost, president emeritus of Eastern New Mexico University, died on October 21. He was 82.

Diane Edmund Griffin, chair emeritus of the department of molecular microbiology at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health and vice president of the National Academy of Sciences, died on October 28. She was 84.

William R. Johnson, former president of Stephen F. Austin State University, died on October 23. He was 91.

William T. Scherer, a professor and chair of the department of systems and information engineering at the University of Virginia, died on October 30.
