DEATHS Kate Chesley, former managing editor of Stanford Report who worked at Stanford University in various roles for over 20 years, died on October 25. She was 66.
Claire Gaudiani, president of Connecticut College from 1988 to 2001, died on October 16. She was 79.
Thomas E. Kurtz, a professor emeritus of computer science and mathematics at Dartmouth College and inventor of the simplified computer programming language known as BASIC, died on November 12. He was 96.
Maureen McDermott, director of student involvement and the Memorial Union at the University of Rhode Island, died on November 15.

Pat Koch Thaler, former dean of arts, sciences, and humanities at the School of Continuing Education at New York University, died on November 16. She was 92.
Clifton R. Wharton Jr., president of Michigan State University from 1970-78, died at 98. He was the first Black president of a major predominantly white university in the United States, and he also served as chancellor of the State University of New York from 1978-87.
