Appointments

Paul H. Alexander, vice president for academic affairs at Hope International University, will become president on August 16. He will succeed John L. Derry, who plans to retire.

Joseph L. Chillo, president of Newbury College, will become president of Thomas More University on June 1.

Todd Diacon, executive vice president and provost at Kent State University, has been named president of the university. He will succeed Beverly Warren, who plans to step down on July 1.

Martin Eggensperger, vice chancellor for academic affairs at Arkansas State University at Mountain Home, will become president of Black River Technical College on July 1. He will replace Jan Ziegler, who has served as interim president since Eric Turner left to lead Southwest Baptist University.

Ann Filemyr, vice president for academic affairs and dean at Southwestern College, in New Mexico, has been named president.

Robert G. Gregerson, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and senior adviser to the provost at Florida Gulf Coast University, will become president of the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg on July 1. He will succeed Sharon P. Smith, who plans to retire.

Ben Gutierrez, a professor of religion and former co-provost and vice president for academic affairs at Liberty University, will become president of Lancaster Bible College on August 1.

Todd Holcomb, president of Western Nebraska Community College, will become president of Hawkeye Community College on July 1. He will succeed Linda Allen, who plans to retire.

Shannon L. Kennedy, executive vice president of Cleveland Community College, in North Carolina, has been named president of Rappahannock Community College, in Virginia.

James McGrath, professor of law and associate dean for academic support and bar services at the Texas A&M University School of Law, will become president and dean at Western Michigan University-Thomas M. Cooley Law School on July 1. He will replace Jeffrey Martlew, who has served as interim president since Don LeDuc retired last summer.

Sanjit Sethi, director of the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at George Washington University, will become president of Minneapolis College of Art and Design on July 15. He will replace Karen Wirth, who has served as interim president since Jay Coogan stepped down in September 2018.

Jack Shannon, vice president for strategic alliances, economic development and civic partnerships at Montclair State University, will become president of Christian Brothers University on July 1. He will succeed John Smarrelli Jr., who plans to retire.

Janet L. Steinmayer, president of Mitchell College, has been named president of Lesley University. She will replace Richard S. Hansen, who has served as interim president since September 2018.

Resignations

Barton D. Darrell, president of Kentucky Wesleyan College since 2014, plans to step down on June 1.

Lawrence M. Schall, president of Oglethorpe University since 2005, plans to step down on June 30, 2020.

Resignations

Leslie Bellavance, president of the Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University and vice president of the university, plans to step down on June 30 and return to the faculty.

Retirements

Dwight Shelton, vice president for finance and chief financial officer at Virginia Tech, plans to step down from his post on September 30 and retire from the university on November 30.

Sarah Armstrong Tucker, chancellor of the West Virginia Community and Technical College System, has been named interim chancellor of West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission.

Deaths

William Slater Banowsky, president and chief executive officer of Pepperdine University from 1971 to 1978, died on April 28. He was 83. Banowsky first joined the university in 1959 as associate dean of students.

Stanley Bergen Jr., founding president of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, now called Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, died on April 24. He was 89. He served as president from 1971 to 1998.

Charles Hess, dean emeritus of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California at Davis, died on April 13. He was 87. Hess arrived at the university as dean in 1975 and oversaw the creation of the UC Davis Student Farm and the college’s biotechnology program. He was appointed assistant secretary for science and education in the U.S. Department of Agriculture by President George H.W. Bush in 1989 and appointed to the National Science Board, the governing board of the National Science Foundation, in 1992. He retired as dean in 1994, but continued to work with the university.

Subbiah Ramalingam, professor emeritus of mechanical engineering at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and member of the National Academy of Engineering, died on February 9. He was 83.

Julian L. Roberts Jr., professor emeritus of chemistry at the University of Redlands died on March 15. He was 83. He taught at the university for 38 years. He co-wrote Electrochemistry for Chemists (Wiley, 1974) with Donald T. Sawyer and was the lead author of multiple editions of Chemistry in the Laboratory, a continuation of the Franz Malm lab manual series.

Benjamin C. Sax, professor emeritus of history at the University of Kansas, died on April 13. He was 69.

Joan Frances Walker, a former assistant professor and coordinator of counseling services at John Tyler Community College, died on April 20. She was 84.

George F. Yee, president of Miramar College from 1977 to 1989, died on April 15. He was 92.
