Sarah Armstrong Tucker,chancellor of the West Virginia Community and Technical College System, has been named interim chancellor of West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission.
Deaths
William Slater Banowsky,president and chief executive officer of Pepperdine University from 1971 to 1978, died on April 28. He was 83. Banowsky first joined the university in 1959 as associate dean of students.
Stanley Bergen Jr.,founding president of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, now called Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, died on April 24. He was 89. He served as president from 1971 to 1998.
Charles Hess,dean emeritus of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California at Davis, died on April 13. He was 87. Hess arrived at the university as dean in 1975 and oversaw the creation of the UC Davis Student Farm and the college’s biotechnology program. He was appointed assistant secretary for science and education in the U.S. Department of Agriculture by President George H.W. Bush in 1989 and appointed to the National Science Board, the governing board of the National Science Foundation, in 1992. He retired as dean in 1994, but continued to work with the university.

Subbiah Ramalingam, professor emeritus of mechanical engineering at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and member of the National Academy of Engineering, died on February 9. He was 83.
Julian L. Roberts Jr., professor emeritus of chemistry at the University of Redlands died on March 15. He was 83. He taught at the university for 38 years. He co-wrote Electrochemistry for Chemists (Wiley, 1974) with Donald T. Sawyer and was the lead author of multiple editions of Chemistry in the Laboratory, a continuation of the Franz Malm lab manual series.
Benjamin C. Sax,professor emeritus of history at the University of Kansas, died on April 13. He was 69.
Joan Frances Walker,a former assistant professor and coordinator of counseling services at John Tyler Community College, died on April 20. She was 84.
George F. Yee,president of Miramar College from 1977 to 1989, died on April 15. He was 92.
