Appointments

Bradley J. Cook, provost at Southern Utah University, has been named president of Snow College. He will succeed Gary L. Carlston, who plans to retire on May 17.

Ronald P. Gerhard, vice chancellor for business services at the Chabot-Las Positas Community College District, has been named interim chancellor.

Rear Adm. William G. Kelly, assistant commandant for human resources in the U.S. Coast Guard, will become superintendent of the United States Coast Guard Academy this summer. He will succeed Rear Adm. James E. Rendon.

Resignations

David E. Van Zandt, president of New School since 2011, plans to step down at the end of the 2019-2020 academic year.

Retirements

John L. Derry, president of Hope International University since 2003, plans to retire on August 15.

Pamela A. Eibeck, president of University of the Pacific since 2009, plans to retire on July 1.

Kathy Hart, president of San Joaquin Delta College since 2012, plans to retire in September. She was the first woman to lead the college.

David L. Levinson, president of Norwalk Community College and vice president of community colleges for the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities, plans to retire from both posts on June 30. He will remain as a presidential fellow with the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities for a year after his retirement.

Vincent Del Casino Jr., interim senior vice provost and vice president for academic initiatives and student success at University of Arizona, will become provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at San Jose State University on July 15.

Scott Hicks, interim provost at Liberty University, has been named to the post permanently.

Salomon Amar, professor of pharmacology, microbiology and immunology at New York Medical College and provost for biomedical research and chief biomedical research officer at Touro College and University System, has been named vice president for research at New York Medical College.

John Edwards, director of career development at the Metropolitan College of New York, has been named executive director of the college’s Bronx campus and the College-Wide Career Development Office.

Ivonne M. García, an associate professor of English and literature and director of the Latinx studies concentration at Kenyon College, became the first chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer at the College of Wooster on June 1.

Joffery Gaymon, vice president for enrollment and student affairs at the University of West Florida, will become vice president for enrollment at Auburn University on March 4.

Lorraine Goffe, vice president for human resources at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will become vice president for human resources and chief human resources officer at Pennsylvania State University on March 1.

Chris Lewis, former interim president of J.F. Drake State Technical College, has been named vice president for community outreach and strategic partnerships at Rock Valley College.

Peter E. Sand, senior manager of privacy and customer trust at Amazon Lab126 in Sunnyvale, California, has been named the first chief privacy officer at Indiana University at Bloomington.

Arthur S. Levine, senior vice chancellor for the health sciences and dean of the School of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, plans to step down and open a new laboratory in the university’s Brain Institute.

Kellie Byrd Danso, director of student engagement and career development at Gateway Community College, has been named dean of students at Norwalk Community College.

Kitaw Demissie, professor and chair of epidemiology and director of the Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities in the School of Public Health at Rutgers University at New Brunswick, has been named dean of the School of Public Health at State University of New York Downstate Medical Center.

Janette Funaro, professor and chair of foreign languages at Johnson County Community College, has been named dean of social sciences, education and world languages.

Blanca Lupiani, executive associate dean of faculties at Texas A&M University, will become dean of faculties and associate provost on March 1.

Andrew Lyon, dean of the Schmid College of Science and Technology at Chapman University, has been named the founding dean of Chapman’s Fowler School of Engineering.

Carl Mattacola, associate dean of academic and faculty affairs in the College of Health Sciences at the University of Kentucky, will become dean of the School of Health and Human Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro on June 1.

Jennie Pu, library media specialist at West Orange High School, in New Jersey, became dean of libraries at Hudson County Community College on January 7.

Enric Ruiz-Geli, founder and director of the architectural firm Cloud 9, in Barcelona, Spain, has been named professor of practice at the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech.

Frank Y. Wong, a professor of psychology and tropical medicine, medical microbiology, and pharmacology at the University of Hawaii-Manoa, has been named a professor at the Florida State University College of Nursing.

Lande Ajose, executive director of California Competes, a nonprofit organization that develops recommendations for policies and practices in California higher education, and chair of the the California Student Aid Commission, has been named senior policy adviser for higher education in the Office of the Governor of California.

Claire M. Fraser, director and founder of the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Institute for Genome Sciences, has been named president-elect of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Jeremy Singer, chief operations officer of the College Board, has been named president.

Resignations

Raymund A. Paredes, higher education commissioner for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, plans to step down on August 31.

Deaths

Floyd F. Feeney, a professor of law at the University of California at Davis, died on January 8. He was 85. Feeney was a founding faculty member of the School of Law. He joined the faculty in 1968 and remained an active faculty member until his death.

Roy J. Glauber, professor emeritus of physics at Harvard University, died on December 26. He was 93. Glauber received a Nobel Prize in Physics in 2005 “for his contribution to the quantum theory of optical coherence.” He attended Harvard as an undergraduate, interrupting his studies during his sophomore year in 1943 to work on the Manhattan Project.

Joseph N. Hankin, president of Westchester Community College from 1971 until he retired in 2014, died on January 16. He was 78. His 42 years at the helm of the college made him the nation’s longest-serving community college president at the time he retired.

Nils Hasselmo, president of the University of Minnesota from 1988 to 1997, died on January 23. He was 87. Hasselmo oversaw the 1991 closure of the Waseca campus, as well as a renewal of the university’s committment to undergraduate education.

Sonny Johansson, professor emeritus of pathology and microbiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, died on December 27. He was 76.

Warren D. MacKenzie, an influential potter and a former professor of art at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, died on December 31. He was 94.

Mary Miles, an associate teaching professor of English and history at Pennsylvania State University at University Park, died suddenly on January 6. She was 47.

Jessica Nielsen, an assistant professor in the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing, died unexpectedly on January 5. She was 43.
