Elizabeth Lederer,a part-time lecturer at Columbia University’s Law School and a prosecutor with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, has stepped down from her position at Columbia after statements from the Black Student Organization and the Black Law Student Association. Lederer was a prosecutor in the 1989 “Central Park Five” case, recently portrayed in the Netflix series When They See Us.

Andy Goodman,a former legislative director for the governor of Arkansas, has been named president and chief executive of the Arkansas’ Independent Colleges and Universities.
Deaths
Elizabeth Barrett-Connor,a professor of family medicine and public health at the University of California at San Diego, died on June 9. She was 84. Barrett-Connor founded the Rancho Bernardo Study in 1972, which focused on lipids, a fatty substance in blood that can cause heart disease. She arrived at the university in 1970 as an assistant professor of community medicine.

Howard J. Burnett,president emeritus of Washington & Jefferson College, died on June 16. He was 89. Burnett served as president of the college from 1970 to 1998, and oversaw the introduction of the college’s first female students and faculty members.
Martin Feldstein,a professor of economics at Harvard University since 1969, died on June 11. He was 79. He also served as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers under Ronald Reagan and as president of the National Bureau of Economic Research for nearly 30 years.
M. Nazmul Karim,a professor and head of the department of chemical engineering at Texas A&M University, died on June 21.
James B. Wyngaarden,a professor emeritus and former chair of the department of medicine at Duke University, died on June 14. He was 94. Wyngaarden left Duke from 1982 to 1989 to be director of the National Institutes of Health, then returned to the university as associate vice chancellor for health affairs from 1990 to 1994.
