Transitions: Connecticut College Names New President

Andrea E. Chapdelaine, president of Hood College, in Maryland, will become president of Connecticut College on July 1.

Kenneth Janz has been named president of Winona State University, in Minnesota, after serving as interim president since August 2023.

Britt Rios-Ellis, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at Oakland University, in Michigan, has been named president of California State University-Stanislaus.

Yamileth Bazan, associate dean of student affairs at Loma Linda University’s School of Medicine, has been named president of Union College, in Nebraska.

William Brownsberger, vice president for academic affairs and work-force solutions at Mountain Empire Community College, in Virginia, has been named president of Saint Martin’s University, in Washington.

Tracy M. Cook, interim president of Alcorn State University, has been named to the post permanently.

Patricia Draves, president of Graceland University, in Iowa, has been named president of Monmouth College, in Illinois.

Marcheta P. Evans, chancellor of Bloomfield College of Montclair State University, in New Jersey, has been named president of St. Catherine University, in Minnesota.

Patrick Jones, chancellor of Pennsylvania State University-Schuylkill, has been named president of Bucks County Community College.

Charles Nies, vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of California at Merced, has been named chancellor of the University of Minnesota at Duluth.

John K. Pierre, chancellor of the Southern University Law Center and interim executive vice president for the university system, has been named chancellor of Southern University’s Baton Rouge campus.

Lance Richey, interim president of University of Saint Francis, in Indiana, has been named to the post permanently.

Aimee W. Sapp, provost at William Woods University, in Missouri, has been named president of Meredith College, in North Carolina.

Justin Schwartz, executive vice president and provost at Pennsylvania State University, has been named the sole finalist for chancellor of the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Steven Schwartz, vice president for finance and administration at Fort Lewis College, in Colorado, has been named interim president.

Charles W. Smith Jr., senior vice president for institutional relations and assistant professor of Christian leadership at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Spurgeon College, in Missouri, has been named president of the University of Mobile.

Tom Stritikus, president of Fort Lewis College, in Colorado, has been named president of Occidental College, in California.

Mónica Torres, chancellor of the New Mexico State University system’s community colleges, has been named interim president of the university system.

Neal Weaver, president of Georgia Southwestern State University, has been named president of Stephen F. Austin State University, in Texas.

Resignations
Besnette Hauser, president of Colorado Mountain College, plans to step down in August.

Fred P. Pestello, president of Saint Louis University since 2014, plans to step down next year.

Robert Robbins, president of the University of Arizona, plans to step down.

Mark Walker, president of Lee University, in Tennessee, plans to step down.

Retirements
Rick Aman, president of the College of Eastern Idaho, plans to retire in July.

DEATHS
Nicholas Apostolou, a professor emeritus of accounting at West Virginia University, died on February 5. He was 81.

Jean Maria Arrigo, a psychologist and whistle-blower who exposed the collusion between the American Psychological Association and the Defense Department leaders on the torture of terror suspects in the wake of 9/11, died on February 24. She was 79.

Sherman Day, a former president of the University of North Georgia, died on March 20. He was 86.

Ramona Edelin, the first chair of the Afro-American studies department (later renamed African American studies) at Northeastern University, died on February 19. She was 78.

Daniel Kahneman, a professor at Stanford University who received the 2002 Nobel Prize in Economics with Vernon L. Smith, of George Mason University, died on March 27. He was 90.

Shani Mott, a lecturer in the Center for Africana Studies and the department of history at Johns Hopkins University, died on March 12. She was 47.

Marjorie Perloff, a professor emerita of humanities at Stanford University, died on March 24. She was 92. Perloff was a literary critic and champion of avant-garde poetry, and taught at the Catholic University of America, the University of Maryland, and the University of Southern California.
