Chief executives

Appointments

Ross Gittell, chancellor of the Community College System of New Hampshire, has been named president of Bryant University. He will succeed Ronald K. Machtley, who plans to retire in May.

J. Michael Pressimone, president of Fontbonne University, will become president of Notre Dame College, in Ohio, on July 1. He will replace John Galovic, who has served as interim president since May 2019.

Edward Seidel, vice president for economic development and innovation in the University of Illinois system, will become president of the University of Wyoming in July.

Chief executives

Appointments

Ross Gittell, chancellor of the Community College System of New Hampshire, has been named president of Bryant University. He will succeed Ronald K. Machtley, who plans to retire in May.

Resignations

Vistasp Karbhari, president of the University of Texas at Arlington since 2013, plans to step down on August 31.

Bart Patterson, president of Nevada State College since 2012, plans to step down on June 30, 2021.

Carolyn J. Stefanco, president of the College of Saint Rose since 2014, plans to step down on June 30.

Jerry Weber, president of Bellevue College, in Washington, since 2017, will step down. This comes after the text on a mural about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II was altered by one of the college’s vice presidents.

Retirements

Teresa Amott, president of Knox College, in Illinois, since 2011, plans to retire at the end of the 2020-21 academic year. She is the first woman to serve as president of the college.

George Bridges, president of Evergreen State College since 2015, plans to retire.

Michael J. Graham, president of Xavier University, in Ohio, since 2001, plans to retire on June 30, 2021.

Bernie Patterson, chancellor of the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point since 2010, plans to retire in December.

Elaine Meyer-Lee, associate vice president for global learning and leadership development and a professor of psychology at Agnes Scott College, has been named senior vice president and provost at Goucher College.

William F. Tate IV, dean of the graduate school and vice provost for graduate education at Washington University in St. Louis, has been named executive vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of South Carolina.

Nathan Urban, vice provost for graduate studies and strategic initiatives at the University of Pittsburgh, has been named senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at Lehigh University.

Marc Belanger, senior director of information technology at Mount Mary University, in Milwaukee, has been named chief information officer and vice president for the information technology services division at St. Norbert College.

Allen Bottorff, vice president for finance and administration at Northeast State Community College, in Tennessee, has been named interim vice president for business administration and finance at Polk State College.

Ryan Cassell, associate dean of admission at Sewanee: The University of the South, will become vice president for enrollment and dean of admission on June 1.

Winston G. DeCuir Jr., a partner in the law firm DeCuir, Clark & Adams, in Baton Rouge, has been named vice president for legal affairs and general counsel at Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge.

Maura DeNicola, interim vice president for university advancement at Felician University, has been named to the post permanently.

José Dieudonné, associate vice presiden for technology and library services at Wilson College, in Pennsylvania, will become chief information officer at Muhlenberg College on March 23.

Kirk Dombrowski, associate dean of research and partnerships in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, will become vice president for research at the University of Vermont on April 1.

Eileen E. Petula, executive vice president for finance, administration, and infrastructure and chief operating officer at Allegheny College, will become vice president for finance and administration at Bucknell University on May 1.

Meredith Robbins, vice president for development at California Institute of the Arts, has been named senior vice president for advancement.

Gayle Colston Barge, vice president for institutional advancement at Bellevue College, in Washington, will step down after she altered the text on a campus mural about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.

Joan Brewer, interim dean of the Teachers College at Emporia State University, has been named to the post permanently.

Sonya Forte Duhé, director in the School of Communication and Design at Loyola University New Orleans, will become dean of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University in July.

Kaye Husbands Fealing, a professor and chair of the School of Public Policy in the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts at the Georgia Institute of Technology, will become dean of the college on June 1.

Sabyasachi (Saby) Mitra, senior associate dean of faculty and research at the Georgia Institute of Technology’s Scheller College of Business, will become dean of the Warrington College of Business at the University of Florida on August 1.

Mark Tillman, dean of the College of Health and Human Services at Kennesaw State University, has been named dean of the Brooks Rehabilitation College of Healthcare Sciences at Jacksonville University on July 1.

Jack Tsai, an associate professor of psychiatry and director of the Division of Mental Health Services Research at Yale University, has been named campus dean of the School of Public Health, in San Antonio, at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Shelley F. Conroy, dean of the Louise Herrington School of Nursing at Baylor University, plans to step down on June 30.

Nicky Agate, assistant director of scholarly communication and projects and interim director of digital scholarship at Columbia University Libraries, has been named inaugural assistant university librarian for research data and digital scholarship at the University of Pennsylvania.

Sharyl Kammerzell, director of global services, risk, and compliance in the Office of International Programs at Washington State University, will become chief compliance and risk officer on April 20.

Laura Perna, a professor of education and executive director of the Alliance for Higher Education and Democracy in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania, will become vice provost for faculty on July 1.

Katherine Stanton, interim director of the McGraw Center for Teaching and Learning and associate dean of the college at Princeton University since July 2019, has been named to the post permanently.

Deaths

Henry J. Abraham, a professor emeritus of politics at the University of Virginia, died on February 26. He was 98. Abraham wrote several books on civil rights and law, including Freedom and the Court: Civil Rights and Liberties in the United States (Oxford University Press, 1967).

William E. Gardner, a former dean of the College of Education at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, died on February 16. He was 91.

Lawrence Markus, a retired professor of mathematics and founder of the Center for Control Science at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, died on January 18. He was 97. Markus taught at the University of Chicago before leaving to work on the Manhattan Project during World War II. He also taught at Harvard, Princeton, and Yale before joining the faculty at Minnesota.
