Appointments

Col. Mark Anarumo, director of the Center for Character and Leadership Development at the U.S. Air Force Academy, will become president of Norwich University on June 1. He will succeed Richard W. Schneider, who plans to step down.

Lori Berquam, executive vice president at Maricopa County Community College District, has been named interim president.

Robert P. Elmore, vice president and chief operating officer at Chatfield College, has been named president of the college. He will replace John P. Tafaro, who plans to retire at the end of the year.

Appointments

Col. Mark Anarumo, director of the Center for Character and Leadership Development at the U.S. Air Force Academy, will become president of Norwich University on June 1. He will succeed Richard W. Schneider, who plans to step down.

Lori Berquam, executive vice president at Maricopa County Community College District, has been named interim president.

Robert P. Elmore, vice president and chief operating officer at Chatfield College, has been named president of the college. He will replace John P. Tafaro, who plans to retire at the end of the year.

George W. Hynd, interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and interim provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, has been named interim president of Winthrop University.

Janet Levit, provost at the University of Tulsa, has been named acting president. She replaces Gerard Clancy, who is taking a temporary leave of absence for medical reasons.

Thomas Newsom, interim vice president for student success and dean of students at Texas A&M University at Commerce, will become president of Southeastern Oklahoma State University on April 30. He will replace Bryon Clark, who has been serving as interim president since Sean Burrage left to become vice president for executive affairs at the University of Oklahoma.

Suzanne Rivera, vice president for research and technology management at Case Western Reserve University, has been named president of Macalester College. She will succeed Brian Rosenberg, who plans to step down in May, and she will be the first female and Latina president of the college.

Marcelo Suárez-Orozco, dean of the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at the University of California at Los Angeles, has been named sole finalist for president of the University of Massachusetts at Boston.

Mark L. Walker, vice president for ministerial development at Lee University, has been named president. He will succeed Paul Conn, who plans to step down on August 1.

S. David Wu, provost and executive vice president at George Mason University, will become president of City University of New York’s Bernard M. Baruch College on July 1. He will succeed Mitchel B. Wallerstein, who plans to step down. He will be the first Asian-American to serve as president of a CUNY college.

Retirements

Constance M. Carroll, chancellor of the San Diego Community College District since 2004, plans to retire in 2021.

Stuart Rabinowitz, president of Hofstra University since 2001, plans to retire on August 31, 2021.

Ramon S. Torrecilha, president of Westfield State University since 2016, plans to retire on August 31.

Susan Collins, former dean of the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, has been named acting provost.

Sandra Sharman, interim vice president for academic and student affairs at East Georgia State College since August 2019, has been named to the post permanently.

Janice Warner, interim provost and chief academic officer at Georgian Court University, has been named to the post permanently.

Resignations

Lisa Lynch, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at Brandeis University, plans to step down this summer. She will return to the faculty of the Heller School for Social Policy and Management after a sabbatical.

Lance R. Collins, dean of the College of Engineering at Cornell University, has been named the inaugural vice president and executive director of Virginia Tech’s Innovation Campus, in Alexandria.

Mary Larson Diaz, interim vice president for university relations at the University of Texas at San Antonio since June 2019, has been named to the post permanently.

Josh Hibbard, interim vice president for enrollment management at Central Washington University, has been named to the post permanently.

Khuram Hussain, dean of Hobart College and an associate professor of education at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, has been named vice president for diversity, equity and inclusion at the colleges.

Ryon Kaopuiki, vice president for enrollment and marketing at Anderson University, in Indiana, has been named vice president for enrollment and marketing at Manchester University.

Chris Krzak, assistant vice president for enrollment management and executive director of admission at University of the Pacific, has been named vice president for enrollment and retention at Georgian Court University.

Andrew Maylor, comptroller of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and former town manager of North Andover, will become vice president and chief business officer at Merrimack College on February 24.

Steve Munson, chief information officer at Marymount University, has been named vice president and chief information officer at American University.

Wendy Parsons, associate vice president for development at Monmouth University, has been named vice president for advancement at Albright College.

J. Malcolm Smith, interim vice president for student affairs and acting dean of students at Salve Regina University since July 2019, has been named vice president for student affairs and will continue as acting dean of students.

James E. Trusdell, vice president for finance and administration/chief financial officer at Georgian Court University, will become vice president for finance and administration at Gwynedd Mercy University on March 1.

Friday Dallas Long, associate dean of the Milner Library at Illinois State University, has been named dean of the library.

Pedro J. Mago, department head and professor of mechanical engineering at Mississippi State University, will become dean of the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University on July 1.

Justin Rose, associate professor of political science at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, will become dean of faculty recruitment, retention, and diversity at Rhodes College in July.

Mark Rosenbaum, a professor and chair of the department of retailing at the University of South Carolina at Columbia, has been named dean of the Graham School of Management at Saint Xavier University.

Allison Vorderstrasse, an associate professor of nursing and medicine and director of the Ph.D. program in nursing research and theory at New York University, will become dean of the College of Nursing at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst on July 1.

Sarah Laursen, curator of Asian Art at the Middlebury College Museum of Art and an assistant professor in the department of history of art and architecture at Middlebury College, will become associate curator of Chinese art at the Harvard Art Museums on June 15.

Leah Cox, dean of the American Dance Festival and an associate professor of dance at Bard College, has been named an associate professor of dance in the College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas at Austin.

Retirements

Robert F. Turner, a professor of law and co-founder and associate director of the Center for National Security Law in the School of Law at the University of Virginia, plans to retire.

Barbara R. Snyder, president of Case Western Reserve University, will become president of the Association of American Universities at the end of the fall 2020 semester.

Deaths

William E. Brown, founding dean of the College of Dentistry at the University of Oklahoma, died on January 16. He was 98.

The Rev. Bernard J. Coughlin, president emeritus of Gonzaga University, died on January 28. He was 97. He led the university from 1974 to 1996 and is Gonzaga’s longest-serving president.

Eville Gorham, a retired professor of ecology, evolution, and behavior at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, died January 15. He was 94. His research on acid rain contributed to the Clean Air Act Amendment of 1990. He also showed that radiation leaking from a plutonium plant accumulated in vegetation and in turn affected animals. That connection between human action and the environment helped in devising the 1963 Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

Douglas C. Pratt, a retired professor of botany and a former dean of the College of Biological Sciences at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, died on November 8, 2019. He was 77. Pratt conducted early research on plant biomass, now a contemporary focus for scientists investigating new fuel sources.

Stanley Stein, a professor emeritus of Spanish civilization and culture and a professor emeritus of history at Princeton University, died on December 19. He was 99. Stein served as inaugural director of Princeton’s program in Latin American studies and wrote multiple books on Latin American and Spanish economic and social history with his wife, Barbara Hadley Stein.
