William E. Brown,founding dean of the College of Dentistry at the University of Oklahoma, died on January 16. He was 98.

The Rev. Bernard J. Coughlin,president emeritus of Gonzaga University, died on January 28. He was 97. He led the university from 1974 to 1996 and is Gonzaga’s longest-serving president.
Eville Gorham,a retired professor of ecology, evolution, and behavior at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, died January 15. He was 94. His research on acid rain contributed to the Clean Air Act Amendment of 1990. He also showed that radiation leaking from a plutonium plant accumulated in vegetation and in turn affected animals. That connection between human action and the environment helped in devising the 1963 Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.
Douglas C. Pratt,a retired professor of botany and a former dean of the College of Biological Sciences at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, died on November 8, 2019. He was 77. Pratt conducted early research on plant biomass, now a contemporary focus for scientists investigating new fuel sources.
Stanley Stein,a professor emeritus of Spanish civilization and culture and a professor emeritus of history at Princeton University, died on December 19. He was 99. Stein served as inaugural director of Princeton’s program in Latin American studies and wrote multiple books on Latin American and Spanish economic and social history with his wife, Barbara Hadley Stein.
