Transitions: Hamilton College Names New President; Colorado College President to Step Down

Appointments
Nancy Cantor, chancellor of Rutgers University at Newark, has been named president of the City University of New York’s Hunter College.

Jeffrey A. Doggett, executive vice president, chief financial officer, and chancellor of learning and student success at Merrimack College, in Massachusetts, has been named president of Wagner College, in New York.

Jens Frederiksen, executive vice president for institutional advancement and enrollment management at Fisk University, in Tennessee, has been named president of the University of New Haven, in Connecticut.

Safiya George, dean of the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University, has been named president of the University of the Virgin Islands.

Paul Kreider, vice provost at West Virginia University, has been named interim president of the university’s Potomac State College.

Morakinyo A.O. Kuti, vice president for research and economic development and director of land-grant programs at Central State University, in Ohio, has been named president of the university.

Richard Rhodes, interim president of Texas A&M University-Central Texas, has been named to the post permanently.

Steven Tepper, dean and director of the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University, has been named president of Hamilton College, in New York.

Jack Warner, who has served as interim president of Rhode Island College since April 2022, has been named to the post permanently.

Resignations
Kwang-Wu Kim, president of Columbia College Chicago, plans to step down.

L. Song Richardson, president of Colorado College, plans to step down and join the faculty at the University of California at Irvine School of Law.

Neal J. Smatresk, president of the University of North Texas since 2014, plans to step down in August.

Retirements
Celia Esposito-Noy, superintendent and president of Solano Community College, in California, will retire at the end of June.

Courtney C. Coile, a professor of economics at Wellesley College, in Massachusetts, has been named provost and dean of the college.

Anne Dahlman, interim associate provost at Minnesota State University at Mankato, has been named provost and vice president for academic affairs at Northern Michigan University.

Ryan C. Hendrickson, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at Eastern Illinois University, has been named to the post permanently.

DEATHS
Charles V. Hamilton, a professor who taught at Rutgers University and Columbia University, died on November 18. He was 94. Hamilton wrote Black Power: The Politics of Liberation (1967) with Stokely Carmichael.

Charles Sallis, a former professor of history at Millsaps College, in Mississippi, died on February 2. He was 89. With James W. Loewen, Sallis wrote Mississippi: Conflict & Change (1974), a high-school textbook that offered a frank view of the state’s history.

Clyde Taylor, a scholar in Black-cinema studies who taught at the University of California at Los Angeles and New York University, died on January 24. He was 92.
