Transitions: Husson U. Names New President; Iowa State U. Provost to Step Down After 12 Years

Appointments, resignations, retirements, deaths

CHIEF EXECUTIVES
Appointments
Lynne Coy-Ogan, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at Husson University, in Maine, has been named the university’s first female president.

Nora Demleitner, president of the Annapolis campus of St. John’s College, has been named collegewide president.

Suri Duitch, former dean and vice president for academic innovation at the Tulane University School of Professional Advancement, has been named interim president of Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York.

Keith Elder, executive vice president at Mississippi College, has been named president of Saint Xavier University, in Illinois.

Margaret Ford Fisher, interim chancellor of Houston Community College since September, has been named to the post permanently.

Megan Nagel, interim chancellor and chief academic officer since June 2022 at Pennsylvania State University-Greater Allegheny, has been named to the post permanently.

D.J. Washington, director of employer and regional engagement at the University of Notre Dame and vice chairman of the Board of Trustees at Union College, in Kentucky, has been named interim president of Union College.

Resignations
Robert O. Davies, president of Central Michigan University, plans to step down at the end of the year.

Chris Gilmer, president of Potomac State College of West Virginia University, plans to step down.

Retirements
Kristin Clark, chancellor of the West Hills Community College District, plans to retire in July.

Bob Mong, president of the University of North Texas at Dallas, will retire in July.

Lawrence L. Rouse, president since 2018 of Pitt Community College, in North Carolina, will retire this summer.

Birgitte Ryslinge, president of Oregon Coast Community College, plans to retire after 10 years in the role.

John Z. Kiss, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and a professor of biology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, has been named provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at the Florida Institute of Technology.

Tom Nevill, vice president for academics at Butler Community College, in Kansas, has been named vice president for academic affairs at GateWay Community College, in Arizona.

John Meier, provost of Lafayette College, in Pennsylvania, plans to step down at the end of the academic year. He will return to the faculty as a professor of mathematics, and has been named executive director of the American Mathematical Society.

Jonathan Wickert, provost of Iowa State University for 12 years, plans to resign at the end of June.

Julia Jeffrey Rathgeber, vice president for governmental and regulatory relations and business development at Berkshire Hathaway Energy, has been named vice chancellor for governmental relations at the University of Texas system.

Nodir Adilov, a professor of economics at Purdue University at Fort Wayne and interim dean since July of its Doermer School of Business, has been named dean on a permanent basis.

Cynthia Aguilar, a former assistant vice president at Tarleton State University, in Texas, has been named associate vice president and dean of students at the University of Texas at El Paso.

Jeffrey Bardzell, associate dean of faculty and graduate affairs in the College of Information Sciences and Technology at Pennsylvania State University, has been named dean of the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Bruce W. Berdanier, former dean of the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering at South Dakota State University, has been named dean of the College of Engineering and Sciences at Purdue University-Northwest.

Mitch Croatt, a professor and head of the department of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, has been named interim dean of the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, run with North Carolina A&T State University. He will succeed Sherine Obare, who has been named the university’s vice chancellor for research and engagement.

Sherif Elfayoumy, director of the School of Computing at the University of North Florida, has been named dean of the College of Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science at Purdue University at Fort Wayne.

Michael D. Gordin, a professor of modern and contemporary history at Princeton University, has been named dean of the college.

Daniel B. Kelly, a professor of law and director of the Law and Economics Program and the founding director of the Fitzgerald Institute for Real Estate at the University of Notre Dame, has been named dean of the University of St. Thomas School of Law, in Minnesota.

Ka Yee C. Lee, executive vice president for strategic initiatives at the University of Chicago, has been named interim dean of the Division of the Physical Sciences.

Resignations
Charles Bolton, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and interim head of the department of anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, resigned in protest of the process used to identify programs to be cut on campus.

FACULTY
Appointments
David Beasley, a former governor of South Carolina, will join the faculty of the University of South Carolina at Columbia’s Joseph F. Rice School of Law.

DEATHS
Charles Fried, who had taught at Harvard Law School since 1961, died on January 23. He was 88. Fried also served as U.S. solicitor general from 1985 to 1989 and associate justice of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts from 1995 to 1999.

David P. Gardner, president of the University of California system from 1983 to 1992, died on January 2. He was 90.

Lawrence L. Langer, who taught at Simmons University, in Massachusetts, died on January 29. He was 94. Langer’s work focused on literature and the Holocaust.

David L. Mills, a former professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Delaware, died on January 17. He was 85. Mills was known as the internet’s “Father Time” for his development of the network’s time protocol.

Ernest Theodore Pascarella, a professor emeritus in the College of Education at the University of Iowa, died on January 23. He was 79.

Jerrold Ross, dean emeritus of the School of Education at St. John’s University, in New York, died on February 1. He was 88.

William R. Stott Jr., who from 1985 to 1995 served as president of Ripon College, in Wisconsin, died on February 1. He was 88.

Cleon Thompson, a former chancellor of Winston-Salem State University and North Carolina A&T State University, died on January 27. He was 92.
