Transitions: Indiana U. at Bloomington Selects New President; 2021 Guggenheim Fellows Named

CHIEF EXECUTIVES
Appointments
Brad Carson, a professor of public policy at the University of Virginia and former U.S. Representative for the 2nd District of Oklahoma, will become president of the University of Tulsa on July 1.

Melissa Gonzalez, president of Houston Community College Southeast, has been named president of Lone Star College-Kingwood.

Donald J. Green, president of Georgia Highlands College, has been named president of Point Park University. He will succeed Paul Hennigan, who plans to retire.

Daniel Heimmermann, provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Texas-Permian Basin, has been named chancellor of the University of South Carolina at Aiken. He will succeed Sandra Jordan, who plans to retire.

William Heineman, provost at Northern Essex Community College, has been named president of North Shore Community College.

Rebecca Johnson, vice president at Oregon State University at Cascades, will become interim president of Oregon State University on May 1. She will replace Edward Feser, who has served as acting president since F. King Alexander resigned.

Donald P. Lofe Jr., interim president of Westminster College since June, will become president of the Missouri college in July.

Tim McDonald, executive vice president at Lanier Technical College, has been named president of the college.

Marc B. Parlange, provost and senior vice president at Monash University in Australia, will become president of the University of Rhode Island on August 1. He will succeed David M. Dooley, who plans to retire.

Anne M. Prisco, former president of Felician University, will become president of Holy Family University on July 12. She will be the first lay person to lead the university.

Mark A. Roberts, interim president of Reinhardt University, has been named to the post permanently.

Glenn M. Sulmasy, provost and chief academic officer at Bryant University, has been named president of Nichols College. He will succeed Susan West Engelkemeyer, who plans to retire.

Pamela Whitten, president of Kennesaw State University, will become president of Indiana University at Bloomington on July 1. She will be the first woman to lead the university and will succeed Michael A. McRobbie, who plans to retire.

Cedric T. Wins, a retired major general in the U.S. Army who has served as interim superintendent of the Virginia Military Institute since November, has been named the institute’s first Black superintendent.

Resignations
Scott Rule, chancellor of Louisiana Delta Community College, plans to step down on June 30.

Retirements
Donna M. Carroll, president of Dominican University since 1994, plans to retire in June.

Jerrilee K. Mosier, chancellor of the Ivy Tech Community College campuses at Fort Wayne and Warsaw, plans to retire on September 10.

Linda Schott, president of Southern Oregon University since 2016, plans to retire at the end of the year.

Erika Nash Cameron, an associate professor and department chair in the School of Leadership and Education Sciences at the University of San Diego, will become provost and vice president for academic affairs at Palo Alto University.

Robert U. Fischer Jr., dean of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences at Middle Tennessee State University, will become provost and vice president for academic affairs at Western Kentucky University on July 1.

Amy B. Hietapelto, dean of the Labovitz School of Business and Economics at the University of Minnesota at Duluth, has been named interim executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at the university.

David H. Jackson Jr., associate provost for graduate education and dean of the School of Graduate Studies, Research, and Continuing Education at Florida A&M University, will become provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at North Carolina Central University on July 1.

Don Payne, interim vice president for academic affairs and academic dean at the Denver Seminary since January, has been named to the post permanently.

DEATHS
William Gamson, a retired professor of sociology at Boston College and creator of a game that became an inspiration for the fantasy-sports industry, died on March 23. He was 87.

Red Gendron, hockey coach at the University of Maine, died on April 9. He was 63.

Vartan Gregorian, a former president of Brown University, died on April 15. He was 87. Gregorian led Brown from 1989 until 1997. He also served as president of the New York Public Library and the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

Henry (Hank) Huckaby, former chancellor of the University System of Georgia, died on April 14. He was 79. Huckaby served as chancellor from 2011 until his retirement in 2017.

Arnett C. Mace Jr., a former senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of Georgia, died on April 12. He was 83. Mace also previously served as dean of the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources at the university.

John McNeil, a professor emeritus of education at the University of California at Los Angeles, died on April 10. He was 101.

Robert F. Miller, a former professor of neuroscience and surgery and former chair of the department of physiology at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, died on March 1. He was 81.

M. Richard Rose, who served as president of the Rochester Institute of Technology from 1979 to 1992, died on April 10. He was 88.

Lee Vernon Stiff, a professor emeritus of mathematics education and associate dean for faculty and academic affairs at North Carolina State University, died on March 19.

Frank Pascale Tirro, dean of the School of Music at Yale University from 1980 to 1989, died on March 28.
