Appointments

Terry Allcorn, dean of business and hospitality at Valencia College, has been named president of Kentucky Christian University. He will succeed Jeffrey Metcalf, who plans to step down.

Christopher Maples, who was interim chancellor of Missouri University of Science and Technology from May 2017 through July, has been named interim president of Pacific Northwest College of Art. He replaces Kate Copeland, who served as acting president following the departure of Don Tuski.

Appointments

Terry Allcorn, dean of business and hospitality at Valencia College, has been named president of Kentucky Christian University. He will succeed Jeffrey Metcalf, who plans to step down.

Christopher Maples, who was interim chancellor of Missouri University of Science and Technology from May 2017 through July, has been named interim president of Pacific Northwest College of Art. He replaces Kate Copeland, who served as acting president following the departure of Don Tuski.

Beverly Rodgers, acting president and former provost and vice president for academic affairs at MacMurray College, has been named to a two-year term as president.

John C. Bowling, president of Olivet Nazarene University since 1991, plans to retire in May 2021.

Susan D. Huard, president of Manchester Community College, in New Hampshire, since 2010, plans to retire on December 31.

Donna Wilson, provost and executive vice president at Lock Haven University, has been named vice chancellor and chief academic officer at Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education.

Barbara Lee Bass, chair of the department of surgery at Houston Methodist Hospital, will become vice president for health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences at George Washington University on January 15. She will be the first woman to lead the school.

Djola Branner, a professor of theater and former dean of the School for Interdisciplinary Arts at Hampshire College, has been named vice president for student affairs.

Melanie Haber, dean of continuing education at Manchester Community College, in Connecticut, has been named vice president for corporate and community education at Massasoit Community College.

Charles Marshall, a partner at Brooks, Pierce, McLendon, Humphrey & Leonard LLP, a law firm in Raleigh, N.C., will become vice chancellor and general counsel at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on September 16.

Rebecca Matzke, a professor of history and associate dean for faculty development at Ripon College, has been named interim vice president and dean of faculty.

Mark R. McLellan, vice president for research and graduate studies at Portland State University, will become vice president for research and innovation at the University of North Texas on September 16.

Nancy M.K. Merritt, assistant vice president for alumni relations at Carnegie Mellon University, has been named vice chancellor for alumni relations at the University of Pittsburgh.

Karen Paciero, associate vice president for development at University of Chicago Medicine, will become vice president for advancement at Loyola University Chicago on October 1.

Michelle Ruble, executive director of student life and athletics at the College of Southern Maryland, has been named president of the National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators.

Deaths

Richard J. Ernst, president emeritus of Northern Virginia Community College, died on August 15. He was 86. Ernst served as president from 1968 until 1998. He oversaw the college’s expansion into one of the largest community colleges in the country, with five campuses and a sixth being planned at the time he retired.

Glenn W. Hardy, dean emeritus of the College of Agriculture and Home Economics at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, died on July 18. He was 95. Hardy was dean of what is now named the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences from 1965 to 1987.

Ann E. Nelson, a professor of physics at the University of Washington, died in a hiking accident on August 4. She was 61. Nelson received the J.J. Sakurai Prize for Theoretical Particle Physics in 2018 and a Guggenheim Fellowship for her work in astronomy and astrophysics in 2004. She also advocated for women, African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, and other groups that have been underrepresented in the physical sciences.

The Rev. Hilary Thimmesh, president emeritus and a professor emeritus of English at Saint John’s University, in Minnesota, died on August 11. He was 91. Father Thimmesh was president at Saint John’s from 1982 to 1991.

John W. Webb, former dean of social sciences at the University at Albany and a former professor of geography at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, died on August 17. He was 93.
