Chief executives

Appointments

Dan Arvizu, director emeritus of the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory and senior adviser to the social-change organization the Emerson Collective, has been named chancellor of the New Mexico State University system. He will succeed Garrey Carruthers, who also serves as president of the main campus, and who plans to retire from his dual role on July 1.

Jennifer Braaten, president of Ferrum College from 2002 to 2016, will become interim president at Blackburn College on July 1. She will replace John Comerford, who has been named president of Otterbein University.

Chief executives

Appointments

Dan Arvizu, director emeritus of the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory and senior adviser to the social-change organization the Emerson Collective, has been named chancellor of the New Mexico State University system. He will succeed Garrey Carruthers, who also serves as president of the main campus, and who plans to retire from his dual role on July 1.

Jennifer Braaten, president of Ferrum College from 2002 to 2016, will become interim president at Blackburn College on July 1. She will replace John Comerford, who has been named president of Otterbein University.

D. Glen Cannon, president of Gwinnett Technical College, has been named interim president of Georgia Piedmont Technical College. He replaces Jabari Simama, who stepped down this year.

Michael Cioce, acting president of Rowan College at Burlington County since August, will become president on September 1. The current president, Paul Drayton, is on leave and his resignation will take effect that day.

Gregory T. DeCinque, former president of Jamestown Community College, will become interim president of Tidewater Community College in July. He will replace Edna V. Baehre-Kolovani, who plans to retire.

John Floros, dean of the College of Agriculture at Kansas State University, has been named president of New Mexico State University at Las Cruces. He will take over the president’s role from Garrey Carruthers, who also serves as chancellor of the New Mexico State University system, and who plans to retire from his dual role on July 1. The jobs of president and chancellor have been divided and will be filled by two people.

Shirley Lawler, former provost/vice chancellor for academic and student affairs at Ozarks Technical Community College, became chancellor at Missouri State University at West Plains on June 1. She is the first woman to hold this position, and succeeds Drew Bennett, who is retiring.

Tim Wynes, president of Inver Hills Community College and Dakota County Technical College, has been named president of Black Hawk College.

Federico Zaragoza, vice chancellor for economic and workforce development at Alamo Community College District Central Office, will become president of the College of Southern Nevada on August 15.

Resignations

C.L. Max Nikias, president of the University of Southern California since 2010, resigned on May 25. His departure came days after a letter signed by 200 senior-level faculty members, called for him to step down because of the university’s inadequate and delayed response to allegations that a gynecologist in the student-health center, George Tyndall, fondled and made sexually inappropriate remarks to patients.

Retirements

Donald J. Farish, president of Roger Williams University since 2011, plans to retire in June 2019.

La Jerne Cornish, associate provost for undergraduate studies at Goucher College, will become provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Ithaca College on July 1.

Resignations

Chukuka Enwemeka, provost of San Diego State University, has resigned. He will return to a faculty position at the university.

Karen L. Bathanti, director of human resources and labor relations for Macomb County and adjunct faculty member of human-resources management at Macomb Community College, will become vice chancellor for human resources at Oakland Community College, in Michigan, on July 9.

Jack Chielli, vice president for marketing and communications at Mount St. Mary’s University, became vice president for enrollment, marketing, and communications on June 1.

Frank Doria, major-gift officer at ProMedica Healthcare System, has been named vice president for advancement at Aquinas College.

Terrell Elam, dean of admissions at Liberty University, has been named vice president for enrollment management at Bethel College, in Indiana.

Kristie Harris, director of university budgets for the State University System of Florida, became associate vice president for administration at New College of Florida on May 21.

Margaret Onken, a senior adviser for Let America Vote, became vice president for development at Maryville University on June 1.

Janet Williams, interim vice president for finance and administration at Ithaca College, will become vice president for finance at Wake Forest University on July 1.

Damon Andrew, dean of the College of Human Sciences and Education at Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge, will become dean of the College of Education at Florida State University on August 7.

Susamma (Susan) Barua, interim dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science at California State University at Fullerton since July 2016, became dean on June 1.

Rudolph G. Buchheit, associate dean for academic affairs and administration of the College of Engineering at Ohio State University, has been named dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Kentucky.

Christine BN Chin, interim dean of the School of International Service at American University, became dean on June 1.

Anthony Cocciolo, interim dean of the Pratt Institute School of Information, will become dean on July 1.

Dorothy L. Hodgson, senior associate dean for academic affairs at Rutgers University at New Brunswick’s School of Graduate Studies, will become dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Brandeis University on August 20.

Pedro Maligo, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Rockhurst University, will become dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Doane University on July 1.

Kevin Mandernack, professor and chair of the department of Earth sciences at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, has been named the first dean of the School of Letters and Sciences at California State University Maritime Academy.

Nancy E. Marchand-Martella, a professor and chair of the department of educational psychology at the University of Oklahoma at Norman, will become dean of the College of Education at Purdue University at West Lafayette on July 16.

Scott Marzilli, professor of health and kinesiology and former assistant vice president for academic innovation and student success and dean of the University College at the University of Texas at Tyler, became dean of the University College at the University of Houston-Downtown on June 1.

Alfred Osborne Jr., senior associate dean and professor at the University of California at Los Angeles Anderson School of Management, will become interim dean on July 1.

Antony Page, vice dean and a professor of law at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis Robert H. McKinney School of Law, will become dean of the Florida International University College of Law on July 30.

Edith Parker, professor and chair of the department of community and behavioral health at the University of Iowa, became dean of the College of Public Health on June 1.

Morteza Rahmatian, interim dean of the Mihaylo College of Business and Economics at California State University at Fullerton, will become dean on July 1.

Diana Rogers-Adkinson, dean of the College of Education at Southeast Missouri State University, will become dean of the College of Education, Health and Human Studies on August 1. The appointment follows a restructuring of the university’s colleges and departments.

Debra Satz, professor of ethics in society and former senior associate dean for the humanities and arts at Stanford University, will become dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences on September 1.

Daniel Terris, founding director of the International Center for Ethics, Justice and Public Life at Brandeis University and visiting professor of American studies at Al-Quds University, has been named dean of the Al-Quds Bard College of Arts and Sciences, in East Jerusalem.

Marion K. Underwood, dean of graduate studies and associate provost at the University of Texas at Dallas, will become dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences at Purdue University at West Lafayette on August 1.

Resignations

Suzanne Reynolds, dean of the Wake Forest University School of Law, plans to step down on June 30, 2019. She will return to the law-school faculty, which she joined in 1981.

Retirements

Chris Birchak, dean of the University of Houston-Downtown’s University College, retired at the end of May. She had served as University College dean since 2004 and taught at the institution since 1985.

K. Matthew Dames, associate university librarian for scholarly resources and services at Georgetown University, will become university librarian at Boston University on July 1.

Giovanni Fernandez, associate professor of finance at Stetson University, has been named executive director of graduate programs at the School of Business Administration.

Pamela Franks, senior deputy director and curator of modern and contemporary art at the Yale University Art Gallery, has been named director of the Williams College Museum of Art.

Kim McCuistion, director of animal nutrition for the United Sorghum Checkoff Program, will become chief of staff to the president at Tarleton State University on August 1.

Susan Elizabeth Chen, a doctorate recipient in economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been named associate professor of agricultural and applied economics at the Virginia Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Leonie Jacobs, a doctorate recipient in veterinary science at Ghent University, has been named assistant professor of animal and poultry sciences at the Virginia Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Karen Vines, a doctorate recipient in agriculture and extension education at Pennsylvania State University at University Park, has been named assistant professor of agricultural, leadership, and community education at the Virginia Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Retirements

Nancy Huff, professor of kinesiology at University of Mobile, has retired. She started at the university in 1992.

Britany Affolter-Caine, interim director of the University Research Corridor since July 2017, has been named executive director.

Stephen L. Pruitt, senior vice president for Achieve and former Kentucky commissioner of education, will become president of the Southern Regional Education Board in July.

Awards

Agnes Attakai, director of health-disparities outreach and prevention education at the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health and program coordinator of the Arizona Indians into Medicine Program at the College of Medicine at the University of Arizona, received the 2018 Rosemary McKenzie Legacy Award from the National Rural Health Association.

Sandra Gregerman, special counsel for undergraduate research and student access at University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and Bert Holmes, chair of science and a professor of chemistry at University of North Carolina at Asheville, received a 2018 CUR Fellows Award from the Council on Undergraduate Research. The biennial awards recognize people who have developed internationally respected research programs that involve undergraduate students.

William R. Harvey, president of Hampton University, received the Lifetime Achievement award at the HBCU Awards hosted by HBCU Digest.

John Yau, an associate professor of critical studies at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University at New Brunswick, received the 2018 Jackson Poetry Prize. Poets and Writers awards the $60,000 each year to an American poet.

Deaths

Robert B. Hayes, president of Marshall University from 1974 to 1983, died on May 11. He was 92. During his tenure, he oversaw the establishment of the School of Medicine and the construction of three new buildings.

The Rev. Michael G. Morrison, the longest-serving president of Creighton University, died on May 24 in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. He was 81. Under his leadership, from 1981 to 2000, the university’s endowment grew from $16 million to more than $200 million, and the nation’s first doctoral program in physical therapy was established there in 1993.
