Chief executives

Appointments

Bradley J. Caskey, provost at Birmingham-Southern College, has been named interim president. He will replace Linda Flaherty-Goldsmith, who stepped down on October 1.

Bonny Copenhaver, vice president for academic affairs and Superior campus administrator at Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College, will become the first female president of New River Community and Technical College on January 2. She will replace Kathy Butler, who has served in the interim after L. Marshall Washington left to become president of Kalamazoo Valley Community College.

Chief executives

Appointments

Bradley J. Caskey, provost at Birmingham-Southern College, has been named interim president. He will replace Linda Flaherty-Goldsmith, who stepped down on October 1.

Bonny Copenhaver, vice president for academic affairs and Superior campus administrator at Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College, will become the first female president of New River Community and Technical College on January 2. She will replace Kathy Butler, who has served in the interim after L. Marshall Washington left to become president of Kalamazoo Valley Community College.

Brian Durham, deputy director for academic affairs at the Illinois Community College Board, has been named the new executive director. He will succeed Karen Hunter Anderson, who plans to retire on November 30.

Tedd L. Mitchell, interim chancellor of the Texas Tech University system, has been named the sole finalist for chancellor of the system. He has served as president of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center since 2010 and became interim chancellor on September 1.

Nancy Nekvasil, provost and professor of biology at Saint Mary’s College, in Indiana, has been named interim president. She replaces Jan Cervelli, who resigned on October 5.

Ret. Vice Admiral Ann Elisabeth Rondeau, president of the College of DuPage, has been named president of the Naval Postgraduate School. She will succeed retired Vice Adm. Ronald A. Route, who plans to step down.

Resignations

Susan E. Borrego, chancellor of the University of Michigan at Flint since 2014, plans to step down in July.

Mitchel B. Wallerstein, president of City University of New York Bernard M. Baruch College since 2010, plans to resign in June. He plans to return to the classroom as a professor of international security and public policy in the college’s Austin W. Marxe School of Public and International Affairs.

Retirements

Jay Gershen, president of Northeast Ohio Medical University since 2009, plans to retire on September 30, 2019.

Lisa A. Rossbacher, president of Humboldt State University since 2014, plans to retire at the end of the academic year.

Claudia Marin Andrade, assistant dean of students and director of the Office of Student Advocacy and Prevention Awareness at Hofstra University, has been named dean of students at State University of New York College at Old Westbury.

Byron Hughes, director of fraternity and sorority life at Virginia Tech, became dean of students on October 1.

Peter M. Loomer, chair of periodontology and implant dentistry and director of the Center for Global Oral Health Sciences at New York University’s College of Dentistry, will become dean of the School of Dentistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio on February 1.

Miner, a senior analyst in the Office of the Under Secretary for Standards and Technology at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in the U.S. Department of Commerce, has been named chief of staff in the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation at Virginia Tech.

Alicia Rodriguez-Pla, who recently completed a clinical fellowship in rheumatology at Boston University and residency in internal medicine at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, has been named a clinical assistant professor of medicine in the division of rheumatology the University of Arizona.

Ashante Barnes Connor, chief administrative officer for student development and campus life at Berkeley College at Woodland Park, New Jersey, has been named co-chair of the New Jersey Title IX Administrators Working Group.

Gita Gopinath, a professor of international studies and economics at Harvard University, has been named chief economist at the International Monetary Fund.

William Miller, a regional chief development officer for the American Red Cross, has been named chief executive of the Kean University Foundation.

Ben Vinson III, provost and executive vice president of Case Western Reserve University, has been named chairman of the National Humanities Center.

Retirements

Deborah Marrow, director of the Getty Foundation at the J. Paul Getty Trust, plans to retire at the end of December.

Deaths

Brenda Armstrong, professor of pediatrics and senior associate dean for student diversity, recruitment, and retention at the Duke University School of Medicine, died on October 7. She was 69. Armstrong was the second black woman in the United States to become a board-certified pediatric cardiologist and was associate dean for admissions at Duke for more than 20 years.

Thomas E. Brennan Sr., founder of Thomas M. Cooley Law School, died on September 29, in Lansing, Michigan. He was 89. Brennan was the president of the school from 1972 to 1975 and from 1978 until his retirement in 2002. He also served as the youngest Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court from 1969 to 1970.

Bruce Buehler, director of the Munroe-Meyer Institute at the University of Nebraska Medical Center from 1983 to 2007, died on September 19. He was 75. Buehler also served as the chair of pediatrics from 1994 until his retirement in 2007. He was considered a national leader in being an advocate for children with disabilities.

Marilouise (Mel) Michel, a professor of theatre at Clarion University for 29 years, died on September 24. She was 56.

Carlo D. Montemagno, chancellor of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale since 2017, died on October 11. He was 62. Montemagno publicly shared his diagnosis of cancer in June, but his cause of death was not revealed. Prior to his tenure as president, he was a faculty member at Cornell University and the University of California at Los Angeles and dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Cincinnati.
