Chief executives

Appointments

Nancy Oliver Gray, president emerita of Hollins University, has been named interim president of the university. She will replace Pareena Lawrence, who plans to step down.

Jay Gogue, president emeritus of Auburn University, has been named interim president of the university. He replaces Steven Leath, who stepped down last month.

Eric LaMott, provost and chief operating officer at Concordia University at St. Paul, has been named interim president. He replaces Tom Ries, who retired this year.

Chief executives

Appointments

Nancy Oliver Gray, president emerita of Hollins University, has been named interim president of the university. She will replace Pareena Lawrence, who plans to step down.

Resignations

W. Richard Merriman Jr., president of the University of Mount Union since 2015, plans to step down at the end of the 2019-20 academic year.

Brien Lewis, president of Catawba College since 2012, will step down at the end of the 2019-2020 academic year.

Larry C. Skogen, president of Bismarck State College since 2007, plans to retire on June 30, 2020.

Beth Norton, assistant vice president for academic affairs at Pellissippi State Community College, has been named vice president for academic affairs at Chattanooga State Community College.

Rupert A. Hayles Jr., former chief operating officer at Christ Church, in New Jersey, has been named chief operating officer at Pillar College.

Matt Pfannenstiel, dean of admissions and financial aid at Bethany College, has been named vice president for enrollment management.

Giovanni Piedimonte, a professor and chair of pediatrics in the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University, will become vice president for research at Tulane University on September 3.

Alicia Wilson, senior vice president for impact investments and senior legal counsel at Port Covington Impact Investments LLC, has been named vice president for economic development at the Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Health System.

Jhennifer Amundson, associate provost of faculty at Judson University, in Illinois, has been named dean of the new O’More College of Architecture, Art, and Design and chair of the department of architecture at Belmont University.

Andy Atzert, senior associate dean for external affairs and associate dean of administrative affairs in the School of Professional Studies at Columbia University, has been named dean of the College of Professional and Continuing Studies at Adelphi University.

Chandice Covington, a professor of nursing at Linfield College School of Nursing, has been named dean of the Martin-Herold College of Nursing & Health at Mount Mercy University.

Martha J. Crawford, a senior lecturer of business administration at Harvard University’s Business School, has been named dean of the Jack Welch College of Business at Sacred Heart University.

Susan Eileen Dinan, a former professor of history and dean of the Pforzheimer Honors College at Pace University, has been named dean of the Honors College at Adelphi University.

Ann Eisenberg, a professor of psychology and former associate dean of the Honors College at the University of Texas at San Antonio, has been named dean of the Honors College at Eastern Michigan University.

Greg Rawski, Schroeder Family Dean in the Schroeder School of Business at the University of Evansville, has been named dean of the Clark H. Byrum School of Business at Marian University.

Joy Williamson-Lott, a professor and associate dean in the College of Education at the University of Washington, has been named dean of the Graduate School.

Donald Hempson, interim executive director of global gateways at Ohio State University, will become associate vice president for international affairs at Virginia Tech on September 10.

James Paharik, a professor of sociology and coordinator of the behavioral health program at Seton Hill University, has been named director of the university’s National Catholic Center for Holocaust Education.

Brian Pappas, an assistant professor of public policy and administration and director of the Conflict Management Program in the School of Public Service at Boise State University, has been named assistant vice president for academic affairs at Eastern Michigan University.

Christy Pratt, senior associate dean of undergraduate admissions at the University of Virginia, has been named director of admissions at the University of Notre Dame.

Shaun Rowe, an associate professor of clinical pharmacy and translational science and a pharmacist specialist in neurology/neurocritical care at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, has been named associate dean of the Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Pharmacy.

Sonny Singh, a global training specialist at the SIT Graduate Institute, has been named social-justice education specialist.

Alton M. Standifer, director of new-student orientation and associate director of undergraduate admissions at the University of Georgia, has been named assistant to the president.

Faculty

Retirements

Diane Prince, a professor of education in the School of Education, Health Professions & Human Development at the University of Houston-Victoria, will retire on August 31 and become a professor emeritus. She joined the faculty in 1974 as an assistant professor.

Deaths

Alan Brinkley, professor emeritus of American history and provost emeritus at Columbia University, died on June 16. He was 70. Brinkley wrote several books, including Voices of Protest: Huey Long, Father Coughlin, and the Great Depression (Vintage Books, 1983), which won the National Book Award for history. Before he arrived at Columbia in 1991, he taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, and the City University of New York.

Paul Otremba, an assistant professor in creative writing at Rice University, died on June 24. He was 40. Otremba wrote three books of poetry, including Levee (Four Way Books, 2019), and was published in several journals.
