Michael J. Lawler,dean and professor of the School of Health Sciences at the University of South Dakota, will become president of Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences on October 8. He will replace Robert Sutton, who became interim president in June.
Karen Cox,executive vice president and chief operating officer of Children’s Mercy Kansas City, in Missouri, and president of the American Academy of Nursing, became president of Chamberlain University on August 27. She succeeded Susan Groenwald, who retired and was named president emeritus.

Resignations
Chase F. Robinson,president of the City University of New York Graduate Center, will leave to become director of the Smithsonian Institution’s Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, in Washington, D.C., on December 10.
Retirements
Ed L. Schrader,president of Brenau University since 2005, plans to retire in 2019.

Adrienne G. Bloss,vice president for academic affairs at Shenandoah University, will become the university’s first provost on September 1.

Kathleen Plinske,president of the Osceola campus of Valencia College, has been named executive vice president and provost at the main campus, in Orlando, Fla. She will continue to serve as president of the Osceola, Lake Nona, and Poinciana campuses until her replacement is named.
Richard Wood,senior vice provost at the University of New Mexico, has been named interim provost.

Jean Smolen,associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Saint Joseph’s University, in Pennsylvania, became dean of the School of Life and Physical Sciences at Delaware Valley University on August 28.
Resignations
Don Visco,dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Akron, resigned in August. This comes after the university’s decision to phase out 80 degree or degree-track programs, including seven in engineering.

Deaths
Paul Burgett,dean of students at the University of Rochester from 1988 to 2001 and then a university vice president, died in August after a brief illness. He was 72. Burgett started as a student at the university’s Eastman School of Music, and served as the school’s dean of students from 1981 to 1988. In 2016, the Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center was established to honor his decades of work for the university, which included serving as chair of the Gateways Music Festival Board of Directors.
Lawrence J. DeNardis,president of the University of New Haven from 1991 to 2004, died on August 24. He was 80. DeNardis served as a Connecticut state senator from 1970 to 1979 and in Congress from 1981 to 1983.
Michelle R. Howard-Vital,president of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania from 2007 to 2014, died on August 21 of cancer. She was 65. Prior to her presidency, she served in various positions at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Harold Washington College, Chicago State University, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and the University of North Carolina system. After stepping down as president, she was named provost at Florida Memorial University and then served as interim president there in 2017.
