Transitions: New Chief at Pacific Northwest U. of Health Sciences, CUNY Graduate Center President to Lead Smithsonian Galleries

Appointments

Michael J. Lawler, dean and professor of the School of Health Sciences at the University of South Dakota, will become president of Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences on October 8. He will replace Robert Sutton, who became interim president in June.

Karen Cox, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Children’s Mercy Kansas City, in Missouri, and president of the American Academy of Nursing, became president of Chamberlain University on August 27. She succeeded Susan Groenwald, who retired and was named president emeritus.

Martin Tadlock, interim chancellor of the University of South Florida at St. Petersburg since September 2017, has been named regional chancellor of the university.

Resignations

Chase F. Robinson, president of the City University of New York Graduate Center, will leave to become director of the Smithsonian Institution’s Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, in Washington, D.C., on December 10.

Retirements

Ed L. Schrader, president of Brenau University since 2005, plans to retire in 2019.

Eugene White, president of Martin University since 2013, plans to retire on June 30, 2019.

Appointments

Adrienne G. Bloss, vice president for academic affairs at Shenandoah University, will become the university’s first provost on September 1.

Beth Boehm, interim provost at the University of Louisville, will become executive vice president and provost on September 1.

Mark Curtis-Chávez, special assistant to the president at Lone Star College-CyFair, became provost at College of DuPage on August 16.

Kathleen Plinske, president of the Osceola campus of Valencia College, has been named executive vice president and provost at the main campus, in Orlando, Fla. She will continue to serve as president of the Osceola, Lake Nona, and Poinciana campuses until her replacement is named.

Richard Wood, senior vice provost at the University of New Mexico, has been named interim provost.

Eric D. Bentley, senior associate general counsel at the University of Houston system, will become vice chancellor and general counsel at the Texas Tech University system on September 10.

Jennifer Berne, dean of liberal arts at Harper College, has been named vice president for academic affairs at Berkshire Community College.

Regina D. Biddings-Muro, vice chancellor of institutional advancement at Purdue University Northwest, has been named vice president for university advancement at California Lutheran University.

Tom Hoy, interim general counsel at the University of Louisville, will become general counsel on October 1.

Ernest E. Jeffries, dean of students at Davidson College, will become vice president for student engagement at Mary Baldwin University on August 29.

Garry Krause, dean of advanced manufacturing, transportation, information technology, and apprenticeship at Blackhawk Technical College, has been named vice president for workforce development at Rock Valley College.

Mandrake Miller, dean of students at Tuskegee University, became the first vice president for student success and engagement at Edward Waters College on August 20.

Hassel Andre Morrison, associate dean of students at the University of Idaho, has been named vice president for student life at St. Olaf College.

Karey Tompkins Pine, assistant vice president for student affairs with the State University of New York, College at Brockport, has been named vice president for student affairs at Cazenovia College.

Lori Przymusinski, interim vice chancellor for student services at Oakland Community College, has been named to the position permanently.

Carola Thorson, executive director of admission and scholarships at Concordia College at Moorhead, will become vice president for enrollment management at Wittenberg University on September 24.

The Rev. Frederick Zagone, assistant to the vice president for university advancement at Marquette University, became acting vice president for mission and ministry on August 30.

Retirements

John Affleck-Graves, executive vice president at the University of Notre Dame since 2004, plans to retire on June 30, 2019.

Kathleen Barnes, associate dean of the Cotsakos College of Business at William Paterson University, has been named dean of the Bertolon School of Business at Salem State University.

Tanya Casas, interim dean of the School of Business and Humanities at Delaware Valley University, has been named to the position permanently.

Michele Cuomo, dean of arts and humanities at Montgomery County Community College, has been named dean of arts and communications at Seminole State College.

Linda Essig, director of the enterprise and entrepreneurship programs in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University, has been named dean of the College of Arts and Letters at California State University at Los Angeles.

James Hackney, a professor of law at Northeastern University, became dean of the Law School on July 1.

Jonathan Hardbarger, director of career and technical-education program development at Mohave Community College, became dean of aviation, engineering, and apprenticeship at Rock Valley College on August 6.

Ann E. Harrison, a professor of multinational management and business economics and public policy at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, will become dean of the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley on January 1.

Xinjian (Arthur) Lu, interim dean of the College of Business and Economics at California State University-East Bay, has been named dean of the College of Business Management at State University of New York Polytechnic Institute.

Carol M. Musil, a faculty member in the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University, has been named interim dean of the school.

Michael Oudshoorn, an associate professor at Northwest Missouri State University and member of the Computing Accreditation Commission at ABET, has been named the first dean of the Webb School of Engineering at High Point University.

Elias Provencio-Vasquez, dean of the School of Nursing at the University of Texas at El Paso, has been named dean of the College of Nursing at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.

Joan Slager, interim dean of nursing at Frontier Nursing University, has been named to the position permanently.

Jean Smolen, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Saint Joseph’s University, in Pennsylvania, became dean of the School of Life and Physical Sciences at Delaware Valley University on August 28.

Resignations

Don Visco, dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Akron, resigned in August. This comes after the university’s decision to phase out 80 degree or degree-track programs, including seven in engineering.

Nerea A. Llamas, associate university librarian at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, will become associate university librarian for collections strategy and services at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on September 24.

Patrick Moore, director of bands and instrumental studies at Houston Baptist University, became director of bands for South Carolina State University on August 16.

Michael Pustizzi, vice president for human resources for network operations at Univision Communications Inc., became the executive director of human resources at Palm Beach State College on August 27.

Vallabh (Samba) Sambamurthy, associate dean for outreach and engagement at Michigan State University’s Eli Broad College of Business, became associate dean for M.B.A. and professional master’s programs on August 16.

William H. Sanders, professor and head of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been named interim director of the university’s new Discovery Partners Institute, in Chicago.

Annette Schwabe, associate dean of undergraduate studies at Florida State University, has been named to the additional position of director of the honors program.

Shree Whitaker Taylor, founder of the management-consulting firm, Delta Decisions of D.C., has been named director of Graduate Studies in Mathematics and Statistics at Georgetown University.

Louise Epstein, managing director of the Innovation Center in the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, has been named director of university partnerships of the Walton Family Foundation.

Keishia Gu, director of admissions and enrollment at the Geffen Academy at the University of California at Los Angeles, will become head of education at the J. Paul Gerry Museum in September.

Deaths

Paul Burgett, dean of students at the University of Rochester from 1988 to 2001 and then a university vice president, died in August after a brief illness. He was 72. Burgett started as a student at the university’s Eastman School of Music, and served as the school’s dean of students from 1981 to 1988. In 2016, the Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center was established to honor his decades of work for the university, which included serving as chair of the Gateways Music Festival Board of Directors.

Lawrence J. DeNardis, president of the University of New Haven from 1991 to 2004, died on August 24. He was 80. DeNardis served as a Connecticut state senator from 1970 to 1979 and in Congress from 1981 to 1983.

Michelle R. Howard-Vital, president of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania from 2007 to 2014, died on August 21 of cancer. She was 65. Prior to her presidency, she served in various positions at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Harold Washington College, Chicago State University, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and the University of North Carolina system. After stepping down as president, she was named provost at Florida Memorial University and then served as interim president there in 2017.
