Transitions: New Mexico State U. and the U. of West Alabama Name New Presidents

CHIEF EXECUTIVES
Appointments
Frederick Bonato, interim dean of the College of Community Health and former associate provost for academic affairs at Montclair State University, has been named interim president of Manhattan University.

Valerio Ferme, executive vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of Cincinnati, has been named president of New Mexico State University.

Todd G. Fritch, executive vice president and provost at the State College of Florida, has been named president of the University of West Alabama.

Kristi Kirk, provost and executive vice president at Concordia University Texas, has been named the university’s first female president.

Lynne Murray, president of Baker University, in Kansas, has been named president of McMurry University, in Texas.

Resignations
Joyce F. Brown, president of the Fashion Institute of Technology, plans to step down at the end of the 2024-25 academic year.

Daniel Greenstein, chancellor of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, will join the consulting firm Baker Tilly after stepping down as chancellor.

Jonathan Holloway, president of Rutgers University, plans to step down at the end of the 2024-25 academic year.

Brian Stogner, president of Rochester Christian University, in Michigan, plans to step down in December.

Retirements
Gregory G. Dell’Omo, president of Rider University, plans to retire in July 2025.

Edward Montgomery, president of Western Michigan University, will retire in June 2025.

Kim A. Wilcox, chancellor of the University of California at Riverside, will retire at the end of the 2024-25 academic year.

Ani Yazedjian has been named vice president for academic affairs and provost at Illinois State University after serving in the position in an acting role since February 2023.

Resignations
Joseph E. Kerschner, executive vice president, provost, and dean of the School of Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin, will step down and return to the faculty at the end of the year.

Nancy Mathews, executive vice president and provost at Central Michigan University, will step down. Paula Lancaster, dean of the College of Education and Human Services, has been named interim provost.

David Stern, provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Tampa, plans to step down at the end of the 2024-25 academic year.

Anne Barnes, vice chancellor for business, finance, and business development at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, has been named interim vice president and chief financial officer for the University of Nebraska system.

Lakeesha Brown has been named vice president and chief human resources officer at the University of Connecticut, after serving as interim vice president since May 2023.

Allison Caudill, executive director of the Office of Alumni Relations and Development at Morehead State University, has been named vice president for university advancement.

Lois J. Geist, associate provost for faculty and a professor in the department of internal medicine at the University of Iowa’s Carver College of Medicine, has been named interim vice president for research.

Cathy Hurd, vice president for enrollment management and assistant to the president for special projects at Mitchell College, in Connecticut, has been named vice president for enrollment management/marketing and student services at Notre Dame of Maryland University.

Ed Kull, athletic director at Fordham University, has been named vice president and athletic director at St. John’s University.

Kristen A. Lainsbury, vice president for marketing and communications at Earlham College, has been named vice president for communications and marketing at Bates College.

Evan Lipp has been promoted to vice president for enrollment management at Marymount University.

Mike Richards, senior vice president for clinical affairs at the University of New Mexico, has been named interim executive vice president for UNM Health Sciences and chief executive officer of the UNM Health System.

Amy Routhier, interim vice president for institutional advancement at Albion College, has been named to the post permanently.

Rowena M. Tomaneng, president of San Jose City College, has been named deputy chancellor of California Community Colleges.

Daniel Valles, senior vice president and chief operating officer at Willamette University, in Oregon, has been named vice president for finance and administration and chief financial officer at Albion College, in Michigan.

Stacy Waters, president of the Roper St. Francis Foundation and vice president of Roper St. Francis Healthcare, in Charleston, S.C., has been named vice president for Duke health development and alumni affairs at Duke University.

Leah Wong, former vice president for external relations at the Minneapolis Downtown Council, has been named chief marketing officer at Gustavus Adolphus College, in Minnesota.

June Yu has been named vice president of the University of California National Laboratories, after serving as interim vice president.

Resignations
Chris Kabourek, chief financial officer and former interim president of the University of Nebraska, will step down in October.

Appointments
Alexis Abramson, dean of the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College, has been named dean of the Columbia Climate School at Columbia University.

Kathryn Bezella, vice dean, director of strategy and innovation at the University of Pennsylvania, has been named assistant vice president and dean of undergraduate admissions at Dartmouth College.

John J. Chin, a professor and department chair in the department of urban policy and planning at the City University of New York Hunter College, has been named interim dean of the Asian American/Asian Research Institute, a CUNY-wide institute reporting to Queens College.

Brian Conners has been named dean of the School of Education at Felician University after serving as acting dean since March.

David H. Dommer, an associate professor of biology at Barton College, in North Carolina, has been named dean of the School of Health Sciences.

Dena Evans, vice dean of faculty and academic affairs at the University of South Florida College of Nursing, has been named dean of the College of Nursing at East Tennessee State University.

Manu Gupta has been named vice provost and dean of the Graduate School at Virginia Commonwealth University, after serving as interim dean since 2022.

Kim Jones, assistant dean of student services and professor of pharmacy practice in the College of Pharmacy at Union University, in Tennessee, has been named dean of the college.

Jason Schmitt, former interim dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at Clarkson University, has been named dean of the College of Arts and Human Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Antonio Bernardo, dean of the Anderson School of Management at the University of California at Los Angeles, plans to step down at the end of the 2024-25 academic year.

Johnnie Early II, dean of Florida A&M University’s College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Institute of Public Health, plans to step down and join the faculty.

Steven Fluharty, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania, plans to step down and return to the faculty at the end of the year.

Allyson Green, dean of the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, will step down at the end of the 2024-25 academic year.

Susanne Ferber, a faculty member and former chair in the department of psychology at the University of Toronto, has been named chair of the department of psychology at Carnegie Mellon University.

Nicholas Payton, a Grammy Award–winning musician and recording artist, has been named chair of the brass department at Berklee College of Music.

Linda Duffy, former director of contracts, grants, and procurement services for the RAND Corporation in Pittsburgh, has been named assistant vice president of research and innovation and director of sponsored programs in the Office of Research and Innovation at Virginia Tech.

Renee Garcia-Prajer, director of education at Planetree International, a nonprofit health-care organization, has been named director of Title IX compliance at Sacred Heart University.

Kathryn Ann (Kam) Moler, a professor of applied physics, of physics, and of energy science and engineering at Stanford University, has been named Stanford vice president for the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.

Scott Newstock, a professor of English at Rhodes College, has been named executive director of the college’s Spence Wilson Center for Interdisciplinary Humanities.

Mary Rice, director of the Institute for Lung Health at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, has been named director of the Center for Climate, Health, and the Global Environment at Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Jordan Ruud, collection development librarian in the Boreham Library at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith, has been named director of library services.

Cindy Sizemore, director of development at Mount Vernon Nazarene University, has been named executive director of alumni relations.

Shanchieh Jay Yang, director of research at the Global Cybersecurity Institute and department head of computer engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology, has been named director of the Institute for Informatics and Applied Technology at Gonzaga University.

DEATHS
Leonard Hayflick, a professor emeritus at the University of California at San Francisco who studied aging, died on August 1. He was 96. Hayflick also taught at Stanford University and the University of Florida.

Lee Stetson, former dean of admissions at the University of Pennsylvania, died on July 31. He was 82.

Ross Terrill, a former associate professor in government and nonresident associate in research of the Fairbank Center at Harvard University who authored numerous books and articles on China, died on August 2. He was 85.
