Appointments

Seamus Carey, president of Transylvania University, will become president of Iona College on July 1. He will succeed Joseph E. Nyre, who will become president of Seton Hall University.

Carlee Drummer, president of Quinebaug Valley Community College, will become president of Columbia-Greene Community College on July 8.

Chief executives

Appointments

Seamus Carey, president of Transylvania University, will become president of Iona College on July 1. He will succeed Joseph E. Nyre, who will become president of Seton Hall University.

Carlee Drummer, president of Quinebaug Valley Community College, will become president of Columbia-Greene Community College on July 8.

Joseph Keegan, vice president for academic affairs at North Country Community College, will become president of the college on June 16. He will suceed Steve Tyrell.

Stacy Klippenstein, president of Miles Community College, will become president of Mohave Community College on July 1. He will replace Diana Stithem, who has served as interim president since Michael Kearns’s retirement.

Jim Malatras, president of the Rockefeller Institute of Government in the State University of New York, has been named president of State University of New York Empire State College. He will replace Mitchell Nesler, who has served in the interim since Merodie Hancock stepped down in March 2018.

Angelica Suarez, vice president for student affairs for Southwestern Community College District, in California, will become president of Orange Coast College in July. She will replace Kevin Ballinger, who has served as interim president since Dennis Harkins’s retirement last year.

Dennis J. Tyner, former senior vice president and provost at Ottawa University, in Kansas, has been named the first president of the university’s new campus in Phoenix.

Resignations

Dorothy Leland, chancellor of the University of California at Merced since 2011, plans to step down on August 15.

D. Mark McCoy, president of DePauw University since 2016, plans to step down at the end of the 2019-20 academic year.

Retirements

James L. Gallogly, president of the University of Oklahoma since July 2018, announced his retirement on May 12.

Ronald K. Machtley, president of Bryant University since 1996, plans to retire on May 16, 2020.

Appointments

Eric Boynton, chair and professor of philosophy and religious studies at Allegheny College, will become provost and dean of the college at Beloit College in June.

Garikai Campbell, provost and dean of Knox College, will become provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of North Carolina at Asheville in June.

Emily A. Carter, dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Princeton University, will become executive vice chancellor and provost at the University of California at Los Angeles on September 1.

Jeffrey A. Frick, dean of the college and academic vice president at St. Norbert College, has been named vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college at Washington & Jefferson College.

Greg Handel, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern State University, has been named provost and vice president for academic affairs.

Mitzi Montoya, dean of the College of Business at Oregon State University, has been named provost and executive vice president at Washington State University.

Resignations

Ralph Byington, provost and executive vice president at Coastal Carolina University, has stepped down.

Sylvia Carey-Butler, associate vice chancellor for academic support of inclusive excellence at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh, will become chief diversity officer at Kennesaw State University on July 29.

Mike Howard, executive vice president for finance and administration at Smith College, will become executive vice president at Tufts University on July 1.

Jim Irwin, associate vice president for finance and administration at Claremont Graduate University, has been named vice president for business and finance at Washington & Jefferson College.

Jake Logan, assistant vice chancellor for university programs at the University of Missouri at Columbia, has been named vice president for university advancement and president of the foundation at Ball State University.

Frank Buckless, interim dean of the Poole College of Management at North Carolina State University, will become permanent dean on July 1.

Stephen J. Cavanagh, dean of the College of Nursing at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, will become dean of the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at the University of California at Davis on July 22.

Nicole Curvin, director of admissions and coordinator of multicultural recruitment at Middlebury College, will become dean of admissions on July 1.

Lincoln Davies, associate dean for academic affairs in the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah, will become dean of the Moritz College of Law at Ohio State University on July 1.

Joshua Fershee, dean of the College of Law at West Virginia University, will become dean of the School of Law at Creighton University on July 1.

Claire Fuller, interim dean of the Jesse D. Jones College of Science, Engineering and Technology at Murray State University, has been named to the post permanently.

Hassan R. HassabElnaby, associate dean of graduate studies and research in the College of Business and Innovation at the University of Toledo, will become dean of the Haile/US Bank College of Business at Northern Kentucky University on July 15.

Gary T. Henry, a professor of public policy and education and director of graduate studies in the department of leadership policy and organizations at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College, will become dean of the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Delaware on August 16.

César Jimenez, associate dean of counseling and student services at El Camino College, has been named dean of counseling and guided pathways at Compton College.

Michael Lu, senior associate dean of academic, student and faculty affairs at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University, has been named dean of the School of Public Health at the University of California at Berkeley.

Lori Messinger, a professor of social work at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, will become dean of the College of Social Work at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville on July 1.

Anna Maria Siega-Riz, a professor of nursing and associate dean of research in the School of Nursing at the University of Virginia, has been named dean of the School of Public Health and Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Doug Way, associate university librarian for collections and research services at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, will become dean of libraries at the University of Kentucky on August 1.

Resignations

Richard E. Goodstein, dean of the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities at Clemson University, plans to step down and return to the faculty on August 15.

Janet Baghoomian, assistant director of the associate degree in nursing program at California Career College and interim director of the online bachelor’s and master’s degree in nursing programs at Stanbridge University, has been named associate dean of nursing at Compton College.

Brian Barilone, director of enrollment services at Valencia College, has been named director of admission for the Hamilton Holt School evening program at Rollins College.

Andrew Glendening, dean of the School of Music at University of Redlands, will become director of the School of Music at Northern Illinois University on July 1.

Karen Gray, executive director of Chapters Ahead Inc., a nonprofit organization that promotes learning and community engagement with individuals with developmental disabilities, has been named administrative director of the Woltemade Center for Economics at Ohio Wesleyan University.

Katherine M. Lasher, Title IX coordinator, equal opportunity officer, and executive director of the Office of Civil Rights and Institutional Equity at Central Michigan University, will become associate vice president for the Office of Institutional Equity at Ohio State University on August 1.

Tasha Loch, resident director at Wentworth Institute of Technology, has been named academic advisor at Moore College of Art and Design.

Andrea Miller, senior associate with the executive search firm, Pierce Gray, has been named the first director of leadership search at Vanderbilt University.

Megan Palsa, executive director of communications, media and public relations in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Texas A&M University, has been named associate vice chancellor for communications and marketing at Houston Community College.

Andree Pacheco, interim director of student development and athletics at Compton College, has been named to the post permanently.

Floyd L. Wormley Jr., associate dean for research and graduate studies in the College of Sciences at the University of Texas at San Antonio, will become associate provost for research and dean of graduate studies at Texas Christian University on June 30.

Faculty

Jina Kang, a postdoctoral faculty fellow at Loyola Marymount University, has been named an assistant professor of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament at McCormick Theological Seminary.

Sean O’Connor, a professor in the School of Law at the University of Washington, has been named professor and executive director of the Center for Protection of Intellectual Property in the Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University.

James Shanahan, a lecturer in the School of Information at the University of California at Berkeley, has been named professor of data science and leader of the Data Science Initiative at Bryant University.

Deaths

Barbara (Bobbi) Lee Harris, professor emerita of nursing at Syracuse University, died on February 4. She was 80. Harris first arrived at Syracuse as a clinical instructor in 1965. With two of her colleagues, she helped start a primary care nurse practitioner program at the university.

John S. Morris, former president of Union College, in New York, died on May 4. He was 93. Morris served as president of the college from 1979 to 1990. During his tenure, the college’s endowment grew from $30 million to $90 million and the college switched to an SAT-optional application process, among other changes.

Goro Shimura, a key figure in number theory and professor emeritus of mathematics at Princeton University, died on May 3. He was 89. Shimura conjectured the modularity theorem with Yutaka Taniyama and received many honors and awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1970. He wrote several books on mathematics, as well as an autobiography, Map of My Life (Springer, 2008).

Fred Westfield, professor emeritus of economics at Vanderbilt University, died on April 24. He was 92. He began his career at Northwestern University before he arrived at Vanderbilt in 1965, where he stayed through his retirement in 1998. His work was published in multiple journals, including the Quarterly Journal of Economics and American Economic Review.
