Tony Frank,president of Colorado State University at Fort Collins since 2008, plans to step down on July 1. He will remain as chancellor of the system, a position he has held since 2015.
Danielle Laraque-Arena,president of the State University of New York Upstate Medical University since 2016, plans to step down on December 22. Ricardo Azziz, chief officer of academic health and hospital affairs of the State University of New York, will oversee the university’s clinical and health-care operations on an interim basis, and Joanie Mahoney, chief operating officer of the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, will serve as an adviser during the university’s transition.

Karen Haynes,president of California State University at San Marcos since 2004, plans to retire in June.

Resignations
Trent Dougherty,a tenured associate professor of philosophy at Baylor University, has resigned following several sexual-harrassment claims. A university investigation found him “responsible” for some of the allegations.
2018 Nobel Prizes
Winners of the 2018 Nobel Prize awards, who were selected by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, are listed below. The recipients in each category will share a cash prize worth more than $1.1 million. Announcement of this year’s prizes will continue through October 8.
James P. Allison,chair of immunology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and Tasuku Honjo, a professor of medicine at Kyoto University, in Japan, shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their “discovery of cancer therapy by inhibition of negative immune regulation.”

Frances H. Arnold,a professor of chemical engineering, bioengineering and biochemistry and director of the Donna and Benjamin M. Rosen Bioengineering Center at the California Institute of Technology; George P. Smith, a professor emeritus of biological sciences at the University of Missouri at Columbia; and Sir Gregory P. Winter, research leader emeritus at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology, in England, shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Arnold received her half for “directed evolution of enzymes”, Smith and Winter received their half for “phage display of peptides and antibodies.”
Arthur Ashkin,a former researcher at Bell Laboratories; Gérard Mourou, a professor emeritus of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor; and Donna Strickland, an associate professor of physics at the University of Waterloo, in Canada, shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for their inventions in the field of laser physics. Strickland is the third woman to receive this prize.
Deaths
John J. McDermott,a professor of philosophy at Texas A&M University, died on September 30. He was 86. McDermott served as head of the department of philosophy and humanities in the College of Liberal Arts from 1977 to 1981. He also founded the department of humanities in medicine in the College of Medicine, and served as the department’s head from 1983 to 1990. McDermott was recognized as one of the 50 Most Influential Living Philosophers by the Best Schools and served as the general editor of the critical edition of The Correspondence of William James (University Press of Virginia, 1992-2004).
