Byron D. Clift Breland,interim chancellor of the San Jose/Evergreen Community College District, has been named to the post permanently. He became interim chancellor in July when Deborah Budd retired.
Kevin Horan,vice president for instruction and student services at Los Medanos College, will become president of Crafton Hills College on January 7. He will replace the interim president, Audre Levy.

Peter Fiedler,vice president for administrative services at Boston University, plans to step down at the end of December.

Lucy Sankey Russell,associate dean for strategic initiatives at Boston University, has been named vice provost and chief of staff at the University of Pittsburgh.
Anna E. von Gehr,chief officer for advancement and external affairs at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, in Sarasota, Fla., will become executive director of development and strategic initiatives for the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in January.

Marsha Berger,a professor of computer science at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University, will receive the 2019 Norbert Wiener Prize in Applied Mathematics for her work with adaptive mesh refinement and Cartesian mesh techniques.
Arkadi Nemirovski,a professor at the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, will receive the 2019 Norbert Wiener Prize in Applied Mathematics for “his fundamental contributions to high-dimensional optimization and for his discovery of key phenomena in the theory of signal estimation and recovery.”

Latha Chandran, vice dean of academic and faculty affairs at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University, has been elected president of the Academic Pediatric Association.

The Rev. Dennis H. Holtschneider,executive vice president and chief operations officer for the Catholic health system, Ascension, and former president of DePaul University, has been named president of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities.
Deaths
Douglas D. Drysdale,a former lecturer at the University of Virginia School of Law, died on November 25 in Charlottesville. He was 94. He taught tax law at the school from 1960 to 1981.
Olivia Hooker,professor emerita of psychology at Fordham University, died on November 21. She was 103. During World War II, she became the first black woman to serve on active duty with the United States Coast Guard. Hooker was a professor at Fordham from 1963 to 1985.
Peter J. Reed, former chair and professor of English at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, died on November 22. He was 83.

Donald J. White,former dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Boston College, died on November 18. He was 96. White joined the economics faculty in 1946 and worked his way up to dean in 1971. He retired as dean in 1994.
