Transitions: New President Starts at Los Angeles Southwest College, Cornell U. Names Its First Female Architecture Dean

Chief executives

Appointments

William Aiken, former interim president at Cleveland Community College and the retired president of Sampson Community College, has been named interim president of Wake Technical Community College. He will step in for Stephen Scott, who plans to retire at the end of August.

Seher Awan, vice president for administrative services at San Diego City College, became president of Los Angeles Southwest College in July.

Gordon Burns, the retired president of Wilkes Community College, will become interim president of Vance-Granville Community College on August 11. He will succeed Stelfanie Williams, who will become vice president for Durham affairs at Duke University in August.

Andrea Kalyn, dean of the Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College, will become president of the New England Conservatory on January 1. She will be the first woman in that role.

Michael P. Mihalyo Jr., provost and vice president for academic affairs at Rockford University, will become president of Wheeling Jesuit University on August 15.

Mim L. Runey, president of Johnson & Wales University’s campus in Providence, R.I., and chief operating officer for the university system since 2011, will become chancellor of the four-campus university system on October 1.

Jeffrey D. Senese, acting president of Saint Leo University since April 30, has been appointed to the post permanently. He joined Saint Leo in January as the university’s first provost and senior vice president for academic and student affairs and moved into the acting role when William J. Lennox Jr. retired.

Eric A. Turner, president of Black River Technical College, will become president of Southwest Baptist University on August 6. He will succeed C. Pat Taylor, who plans to retire after 22 years at the helm.

Resignations

Debasish Dutta, chancellor of Rutgers University at New Brunswick since July 2017, stepped down on July 24. He will take a year’s sabbatical and return to a faculty position in the School of Engineering. Christopher J. Molloy, senior vice president for research and economic development, has been named interim chancellor.

Steve Tyrell, president of North Country Community College since 2012, plans to step down in June 2019.

Retirements

Sharon Smith, president of the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg since 2007, plans to retire on June 30, 2019.

Mary Lou D’Allegro, associate provost at Paul Smith’s College, has been named vice president for academic affairs at Columbia State Community College.

Mika Nash, dean of continuing professional studies at Champlain College, became executive vice president for academic affairs at American International College on July 30.

Kymberly N. Pinder, dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of New Mexico, will become provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in January.

Resignations

Beth Ingram, provost at North Dakota State University, plans step down and return to her faculty position in the department of agribusiness and applied economics on August 16.

Andreas Bohman, chief information officer and chief information security officer at Central Washington University, will become vice president for operations on August 16.

Doug Ewald, a managing director in the tax practice KPMG LLP and former tax commissioner for Nebraska, became vice chancellor for business, finance, and business development for the University of Nebraska at Omaha and the University of Nebraska Medical Center on August 1.

Mark C. Hampton, vice president for enrollment and enterprise analytics at the New York Institute of Technology, has been named executive vice president for strategy and operations at Washington College.

Matthew Kent, associate treasurer in the Office of Finance and Treasury at Princeton University, will become interim vice president for finance and treasurer on October 1.

Steven Moore, a marketing consultant for the management consulting firm Seabeck Group, and former vice chancellor for marketing and communications at Texas A&M University, became senior vice president and chief marketing and communications officer for the University of Arizona in July.

P. Srirama Rao, professor and associate dean for research in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, will become vice president for research and innovation at Virginia Commonwealth University on October 1.

Jabar Shumate, vice president for university community at the University of Oklahoma at Norman, has resigned.

F. DuBois Bowman, chair and professor of biostatistics in the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University, will become dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor on October 15.

Kimberly Chestnut, assistant vice president for identity, health, and wellness in the division of student affairs at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, will become associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students at the University of Wyoming on August 20.

Claudine Gay, dean of social science and founding chair of the Inequality in America Initiative at Harvard University, will become dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences on August 15.

Clare Lamontagne, a clinical assistant professor of nursing at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, has been named dean of health sciences at Holyoke Community College.

J. Meejin Yoon, professor and head of architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will become the first female dean of the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning at Cornell University on January 1.

David D. Allen, dean of the School of Pharmacy at the University of Mississippi, became president of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy on July 25.

James Dorsey James Dorsey, executive director of Washington MESA and president of MESA USA, will become president of College Success Foundation on August 1.

Susan Whealler Johnston, executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, became president and chief executive of the National Association of College and University Business Officers today. She succeeds John Walda, who is retiring after having led Nacubo for 12 years. Johnston is the association’s first female chief executive.

Resignations

Arthur Levine, president of the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation since 2006, plans to step down in July 2019.

Deaths

Joseph M. Holthaus, dean of the School of Medicine at Creighton University from 1970 to 1980, died on July 22. He was 94. After his tenure as dean, he returned to his position on the faculty of the school until his retirement in 2002.

Clemmie Dixon (C.D.) Spangler Jr., president of the University of North Carolina system from 1986 to 1997, died on July 22. He was 86. Prior to his appointment as president, Spangler was president of C.D. Spangler Construction Co. and chairman of the Bank of North Carolina. As system president, he fought against raising tuition and advocated for the system’s smaller and historically black colleges.

Phail Wynn Jr., president Durham Technical Community College from 1980 to 2007, died on July 24. He was 70. Wynn was the first African-American president of the college. Following that role, he served as the first vice president for Durham and regional affairs at Duke University until he retired in May.
