Transitions: Olin College of Engineering Names Next President; New Provost Selected at Hanover College

Chief executives

Appointments

Gilda Barabino, dean of the Grove School of Engineering at City College of the City University of New York, will become president of Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering on July 1. She will succeed its founding president, Richard K. Miller.

Alexander Cartwright, chancellor of the University of Missouri at Columbia, will become president of the University of Central Florida on April 13. He will replace Thad Seymour Jr., who has served as interim president since February 2019.

Mun Choi, president of the University of Missouri system, has also been named interim chancellor of the University of Missouri at Columbia. He will replace Alexander Cartwright, who will become president of the University of Central Florida.

Valerie Nurr’araaluk Davidson, a former lieutenant governor of Alaska, has been named president of Alaska Pacific University. She will succeed Bob Onders on April 25 and will be the university’s first female president.

Frank Dooley, senior vice provost for teaching and learning at Purdue University at West Lafayette, will become chancellor of Purdue University Global on May 1.

Monica Green, interim president since July of Norco College, in the California Community Colleges system, has been named to the post permanently.

John Hauser, president of Carteret Community College, will become president of Gaston College, in North Carolina, in May.

Ken Iwama, founding vice president for economic development, continuing studies, and government relations at the City University of New York’s College of Staten Island, will become chancellor of Indiana University Northwest on August 1. He will succeed William J. Lowe, who plans to step down.

James M. MacLaren, provost at Saint Xavier University, will become president of Lebanon Valley College, in Pennsylvania, on July 1. He will succeed Lewis E. Thayne, who plans to retire.

Frank H. Wu, a professor and former chancellor and dean at the University of California’s Hastings College of the Law, will become president of the City University of New York’s Queens College on July 1.

Resignations

Carol A. Moore, president of Columbia College, in South Carolina, since 2016, has stepped down. Peter Mitchell, a former president of the college, has been named interim president.

Mark Rocha, chancellor of City College of San Francisco since 2017, has resigned after being placed on paid administrative leave.

Appointments

Carey Adams, vice president for academic affairs at Fontbonne University, has been named provost and vice president for academic affairs at Hanover College.

Susan M. Collins, acting provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor since January, has been named to the post in an interim capacity.

Stephen Germic, provost and academic vice president at Rocky Mountain College, will become provost and dean of faculty at Aquinas College, in Michigan, on July 1.

Ann Bordelon, former chief financial officer of Walmart Asia, will become vice chancellor for finance and administration at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville on July 1.

Bethanie Constant, senior director of advancement at Virginia Commonwealth University’s College of Humanities and Sciences, will become vice president for university advancement at Marymount University on May 1.

Rebecca Cunningham, interim vice president for research at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor since June, has been named to the post permanently.

Martino Harmon, senior vice president for student affairs at Iowa State University, will become vice president for student life at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor on July 1.

John M. Hynes, director of business services and transportation for the Beaver Area School District, in Pennsylvania, will become vice president for finance and administration at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania on July 27.

Ray Nault, president and chief executive of College Aid Services LLC, has been named interim vice president for enrollment management at Stetson University.

Julie Payne-Kirchmeier, interim vice president for student affairs at Northwestern University since June, has been named to the post permanently.

Jason M. Ruckert, vice chancellor and chief digital-learning officer at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University-Worldwide, has been named vice president for enrollment management on all of the university’s campuses.

Jay Stroman, senior associate vice president for development and alumni relations at the University of Georgia, will become senior vice president for advancement and alumni affairs and chief executive of the USF Foundation at the University of South Florida on June 1.

Amanda Kit Tollett, dean of the Fort Worth campus and vice president for external operations at Tarleton State University, has been named chief of staff to the president and vice president for university relations.

Retirements

Jane DiFolco Parker, vice president for development at Auburn University and president of the Auburn University Foundation, plans to retire in June.

Martha Banz, interim dean of the College of Professional and Continuing Studies and associate provost for continuing education at the University of Oklahoma at Norman since 2017, has been named dean of the college.

Martin Camacho, dean of the Lamar D. Fain College of Fine Arts at Midwestern State University, will become dean of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts at the University of Texas at San Antonio May 18.

Lorenzo Candelaria, dean and professor of music in the School of Arts of Purchase College of the State University of New York, will become dean of the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University on July 1.

John F. DiTusa, a professor of physics and chair of the department of physics and astronomy at Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge, will become dean of the School of Science at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis on August 1.

Myron Floyd, interim dean of the College of Natural Resources at North Carolina State University, will become dean of the college on April 1.

Shawn Gibbs, executive associate dean and professor of environmental and occupational health in the School of Public Health at Indiana University at Bloomington, will become dean of the School of Public Health at Texas A&M University at College Station on May 1.

Tim Hanley, a former senior partner at Deloitte and executive-in-residence in the College of Business Administration at Marquette University, has been named interim dean of the college.

Jeffrey W. Holmes, a professor of biomedical engineering and medicine and inaugural director of the Center for Engineering in Medicine at the University of Virginia, will become dean of the School of Engineering at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in July.

Feng Sheng Hu, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will become dean of the faculty of arts and sciences and a professor of biology and earth and planetary sciences at Washington University in St. Louis on July 1.

Cherisse Jones-Branch, a professor of history and former assistant chair of the history department at Arkansas State University at Jonesboro, will become dean of the Graduate School on July 1.

Brooke Kandel-Cisco, interim dean of the College of Education at Butler University since May, has been named to the post permanently.

Mickey Latour, a professor of animal science, foods, and nutrition and a former dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, will become dean of the College of Agriculture at Arkansas State University at Jonesboro on July 1.

Melody Lo, a professor and former chair of economics at the University of Texas at San Antonio, has been named dean of the Griffin College of Business at Arkansas State University at Jonesboro.

Mark J. Lodato, associate dean at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, will become dean of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University on July 1.

Eboni S. Nelson, associate dean of academic affairs and a professor of law in the School of Law at the University of South Carolina, will become dean of the School of Law at the University of Connecticut on August 1.

Nitin Nohria, dean of Harvard Business School, who planned to step down on June 30, has agreed to remain at the post through December.

Corey Phelps, associate dean of executive programs and education at the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University, will become dean of the Michael F. Price College of Business at the University of Oklahoma at Norman on July 1.

Patricia Roberts, vice dean in the School of Law at the College of William & Mary, has been named dean of the School of Law at St. Mary’s University, in Texas.

Nancy Songer, a professor and former dean of the School of Education at Drexel University, will become dean of the College of Education at the University of Utah on July 1.

Teshia Levy-Grant, dean of equity and inclusion at Wesleyan University, has been named senior vice president for diversity and inclusion at Webster Bank, in Connecticut.

Eddith Dashiell, associate director of undergraduate programs in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism in the Scripps College of Communication at Ohio University, has been named director of the school. She is the first woman and African American to lead the school.

Gautam Pillay, a professor of engineering and design and a former vice provost for research and dean of the Graduate School at Western Washington University, has been named associate dean of research in the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Cincinnati.

Courtney R. Rowe, assistant dean of advancement in the College of Music at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has been named associate dean of external relations at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University.

Jeffrey Sikkenga, interim executive director of the Ashbrook Center at Ashland University, has been named to the post permanently.

Faculty

Departures

David Daniels, a professor of voice in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, has been dismissed. He was placed on administrative leave in August 2018 after allegations of sexual misconduct.

Dan Welcher, a professor in the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin, resigned after university officials found that he had sexually harassed students.

Deaths

Thomas J. Curry, a former provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, died on March 20. He was 77. Curry arrived at the university in 1983 as a professor of electrical and computer engineering and later served as the dean of the College of Engineering and director of the Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Center.

Gerald Freedman, dean emeritus of the School of Drama at the University of North Carolina’s School of the Arts, died on March 17. He was 92. Before he served as dean, for 21 years, he taught at Yale University and the Juilliard School.

William Hodges Mobley, president emeritus of Texas A&M University at College Station and a former chancellor of the Texas A&M University system, died of cancer on March 25. He was 78. Mobley was president from 1988 until 1993, when he became chancellor, until he returned to teaching in 1994.

John F. Murray, a professor emeritus of medicine at the University of California at San Francisco, died of acute respiratory-distress syndrome, caused by Covid-19, on March 24. He was 93. Murray was a key figure in the study of acute respiratory-distress syndrome and other lung diseases. In addition to his work at UCSF, he served as chief of pulmonary at San Francisco General Hospital and president of the American Thoracic Society, and wrote The Normal Lung: The Basis for Diagnosis and Treatment of Pulmonary Disease (Saunders, 1976).

Joseph A. O’Hare, a former president of Fordham University, died on March 29. He was 89. O’Hare led the university from 1984 to 2003.

Carole Sullivan, dean of the College of Allied Health at the University of Oklahoma from 1994 to 2010, died on March 11. She was 78.

Lenard Wells, a professor in the department of criminology and criminal justice at the University of Memphis, died on March 21, after being diagnosed with Covid-19. He was 69.
