JOB MOVES
Steven J. Fluharty will become dean of the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Arts & Sciences in July. A senior vice provost for research and a professor of pharmacology, psychology, and neuroscience there, he will succeed Rebecca Bushnell, a professor of English who has been dean since 2005.
Lorrie Moore, the author of fiction including the short-story collection Birds of America and the novel A Gate at the Stairs, will teach at Vanderbilt University beginning next fall. She will become the Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Professor of English. She is now a professor in the humanities at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
Bryan F. Smith is the new anti-hazing administrator at Florida A&M University. He was executive director and co-founder of Destined for Success Education Services, a nonprofit organization in Georgia. His new assignment is to ensure that policies adopted after the hazing death of a university band member in 2011 are put in place.
Andrew V. Abela, an expert on integrity in marketing, is the dean of Catholic University of America’s new School of Business and Economics. He has been on the university’s faculty for 10 years and has been chair since 2009 of its department of business and economics, which was transformed into the new school on January 1.
Timothy J. Anderson, a professor of chemical engineering at the University of Florida and director of the Florida Energy Systems Consortium, will become dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in March.
John W. Garland will help provide guidance on matters of academic policy to public historically black colleges in his new role as the first president in residence at the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Mr. Garland was president of Central State University, in Ohio, from 1997 to 2012.
DEPARTURES
David S. Dockery, president of Union University, in Tennessee, since 1995, says he will step down from his post by July 2014. He will then become chancellor and advise the new president and the governing board.
Thomas G. Everett, director of Harvard Bands since 1971, will retire on February 15.
