JOB MOVES

Carol L. Folt, a professor of biological sciences who is serving as interim president of Dartmouth College, will become chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in July. She succeeds H. Holden Thorp, who will step down at the end of June to become provost of Washington University in St. Louis.

Michael T. Benson, president of Southern Utah University, has been chosen as president of Eastern Kentucky University. He succeeds Doug Whitlock, who will retire July 31.

DEPARTURES

Matthew Goldstein, who has been chancellor of the City University of New York since 1999, expects to leave the position this summer. In recent years, he has tried to streamline the curriculum to make it easier for students in the 24-campus system to transfer credits. He also opened the system’s first new community college in four decades.

James F. Barker, who has been president of Clemson University for nearly 14 years, says he will step down from that post as soon as a replacement is found and return to teaching architecture.

Shirley C. Raines, president of the University of Memphis, will retire on June 30, after 12 years in the post. R. Brad Martin, a member of the Board or Visitors and a retired chairman of Saks Inc., will become interim president on July 1.
