Chief executives

Appointments

Jayson Boyers, president of Cleary University, in Michigan, will become the first male president of Rosemont College, in Pennsylvania, on July 1. He will succeed Sharon Latchaw Hirsh, who plans to retire.

Jonathan Holloway, provost at Northwestern University, will become president of Rutgers University on July 1. He will succeed Robert Barchi, who plans to step down.

Chief executives

Appointments

Jayson Boyers, president of Cleary University, in Michigan, will become the first male president of Rosemont College, in Pennsylvania, on July 1. He will succeed Sharon Latchaw Hirsh, who plans to retire.

Jonathan Holloway, provost at Northwestern University, will become president of Rutgers University on July 1. He will succeed Robert Barchi, who plans to step down.

Anne M. Kress, president of Monroe Community College, has been named president of Northern Virginia Community College.

Kerry Prather, director of athletics and head coach of men’s basketball at Franklin College, in Indiana, has been named acting president. He replaces Thomas J. Minar, who was fired after being arrested for sex crimes.

Debra A. Schwinn, a professor of anesthesia, pharmacology, and biochemistry and former dean of the Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa, where she was also associate vice president for medical affairs, has been named president of Palm Beach Atlantic University. She will succeed William M.B. Fleming Jr., who plans to retire.

Departures

Jimmie Bruce, president of Eastern Gateway Community College since 2015, has left the job. The Board of Trustees voted to terminate his contract after placing him on administrative leave.

Heather Hiles, president and chief executive of Calbright College since February 2019, has stepped down.

Jill Tiefenthaler, president of Colorado College since 2011, will step down to become chief executive of the National Geographic Society in August.

Retirements

Kaylen Betzig, president of Waukesha County Technical College since 2015, plans to retire on December 31.

Nick J. Bruno, president of the University of Louisiana at Monroe since 2010, plans to retire in June.

Marcia G. Welsh, president of East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania since 2012, plans to retire on July 31.

Chief academic officers

Appointments

A. Scott Weber, interim provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University at Buffalo since September, has been named to the post permanently.

Beverly Wendland, dean of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University, will become provost at Washington University in St. Louis on July 1.

Sonya Williams, dean of the arts-and-sciences division at Joliet Junior College, has been named vice president for education and chief academic officer at the College of Lake County.

Brett M. Carroll, associate vice president and treasurer at the University of Hartford, has been named vice president for finance and chief financial officer at Mercy College.

Jim English, associate superintendent of business services at West Ottawa Public Schools, in Michigan, has been named vice president for finance at Calvin University.

Tammy Ewin, former associate vice president for marketing and communications at Duquesne University, has been named vice president for communication and marketing at the University of Akron.

Soumitra Ghosh, vice president for strategic enrollment management at Rowan University, will become vice president for enrollment management on May 1.

Ida Gibson, director of diversity and inclusion at Daemen College, has been named the college’s first chief diversity officer.

Mark Jackson, director of athletics at Villanova University, has been named vice president and director of athletics.

Jacqueline Jones LaMon, a professor and associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Adelphi University, has been named vice president for diversity and inclusion.

Robert Solomon, assistant provost for diversity and inclusion at Ohio State University, will become vice president for inclusion, diversity, and equal opportunity at Case Western Reserve University on February 1.

Matthew Sterne, general manager of the Fairmont Pittsburgh hotel, will become vice chancellor for business services at the University of Pittsburgh on February 10.

David V. Valentine, former vice president for finance and chief financial officer at the Kavli Foundation, has been named vice president for financial services and chief financial officer at Otis College of Art & Design.

Resignations

Nathan Mortimer, vice president and chief financial officer at the University of Akron, plans to step down. He will remain at the university until his retirement in 2021.

Retirements

Patricia M. Lampkin, vice president and chief student affairs officer at the University of Virginia since 2002, plans to retire.

Monica Adya, chair of the management department in the College of Business Administration at Marquette University, will become the first female dean of the School of Business at Rutgers University at Camden on March 30.

Robert Alexander, vice president for enrollment and communications at Millsaps College, will become dean of admissions, financial aid, and enrollment management at the University of Rochester on June 1.

Ronald S. Brookmeyer, interim dean of the Fielding School of Public Health at the University of California at Los Angeles since September 2018, has been named to the post permanently.

Nicoleta Bugnariu, vice provost for community engagement and service at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, has been named founding dean of the School of Health Sciences at University of the Pacific.

Mari Castañeda, a professor of communication and associate dean of equity and inclusion in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, will become dean of the university’s Commonwealth Honors College on September 1.

Patricia J. Culligan, chair and professor of civil engineering and engineering mechanics at Columbia University, will become dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Notre Dame on August 1.

Joseph Daniels, acting dean of business administration at Marquette University since May 2019, has been named to the post permanently.

Sarah Gehlert, dean of the College of Social Work at the University of South Carolina at Columbia, has been named dean of the Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work at the University of Southern California.

Robbie Henson, interim dean of the College of Nursing at Oklahoma Baptist University since August 2019, has been named the post permanently.

Rae Matsumoto, dean of the Touro University California College of Pharmacy, has been named dean of the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy at University of the Pacific.

Heather Parker, interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Saint Leo University since November 2018, has been named to the post permanently.

Mark Schweitzer, chair of the department of radiology in the School of Medicine at the Stony Brook University, has been named dean of the School of Medicine and vice president of Health Affairs at Wayne State University.

Amy Waer, executive dean of education and academic programs for the College of Medicine at Texas A&M University at College Station, has been named interim dean of the college.

Joy K. Ward, associate dean of research and a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Kansas, will become dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Case Western Reserve University on July 1.

Robert L. Canida II, assistant librarian and former director of diversity and inclusion at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, has been named diversity and inclusion officer at the University of Lynchburg.

Cathrine Duffy, director of student support at Stony Brook University, has been named director of Healthier U, Stony Brook’s health-and-wellness program.

Rodney Hughes, an assistant professor of higher-education administration at West Virginia University, has been named director of the Center for the Future of Land-Grant Education.

Kevin C. Karnes, chair of the department of music in the College of Arts and Sciences at Emory University, has been named vice provost for the arts.

Alta Mauro, assistant dean of students and founding director of spiritual life and intercultural education at New York University Abu Dhabi, will become associate dean of students for inclusion and belonging at Harvard College on May 1.

Jonathon Russell, chair of the department of art and design at Central Michigan University, has been named associate dean of the College of Arts and Media there.

Taya Jackson Scott, former chief administrative officer and chief of staff at the Morehouse School of Medicine, has been named vice dean of the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Gen. Linda Singh, who retired from the Maryland National Guard in the fall of 2019, has been named inaugural leader-in-residence at Towson University.

Chotsani West, director of student mentoring at Adelphi University, has been named executive director of diversity and inclusion.

Phoebe A. Haddon, chancellor of Rutgers University at Camden, has been named chair of the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia.

Deaths

Ivery Dwight Clifton, a professor emeritus of agricultural economics at the University of Georgia, died on January 1. He was 76. Clifton was the first African American to reach the dean level at the university, when he served as interim dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences from 1994 to 1995.

Donald S. Cohen, a professor emeritus of applied mathematics at the California Institute of Technology, died on January 9. He was 85. Cohen arrived at Caltech as an assistant professor of mathematics in 1965. Before his retirement, in 2003, he also served as executive officer of applied mathematics, chair of the division of engineering and applied science, and chairman of the faculty.

Theresa Di Rocco, former executive vice president and academic dean at Marymount California University, then called Marymount College, died on November 5. She was 89. Di Rocco also worked at Immaculate Heart College, as dean of the School of Music, before its closing in 1980.

Robert Maxwell, a professor emeritus of architecture at Princeton University, died on January 2. He was 97. Maxwell served as dean of the School of Architecture from 1982 to 1989.

David L. Rice, founding president of the University of Southern Indiana, died on January 15. He was 90. Rice joined the university, then called Indiana State University at Evansville, as a dean in 1967. He became president in 1985, when the university became independent from Indiana State.
