Appointments

Paulette R. Dillard, interim president of Shaw University since July 2017, has been named to the position permanently. She replaced Tashni-Ann Dubroy, who left to become executive vice president and chief operating officer at Howard University.

Lisa Williams, vice president for learning and engagement at Cuyahoga Community College, has been named president of the college’s Eastern Campus. She will succeed J. Michael Thomson, who left to become president of Northwest State Community College.

Judy Genshaft, president of the University of South Florida system since 2000, plans to step down on July 1, 2019.

David J. Schleich, president of the National University of Natural Medicine since 2007, plans to retires on July 1, 2019.

The Rev. Stephanie Buckhanon Crowder, an associate professor of theological field education and New Testament at Chicago Theological Seminary, became academic dean and vice president of academic affairs on July 1.

Theresa Hand, associate provost at the Sage Colleges, has been named interim provost.

Lizbeth J. Martin, former provost and vice president for academic affairs at Holy Names University, has been named interim provost and senior vice president at Gonzaga University.

Albert Colom, associate vice president for enrollment services at the University of North Florida, will become vice chancellor for enrollment management at the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire on October 1.

Tim Culver, vice president for advancement at Lexington Catholic High School, in Kentucky, became vice president for advancement at Midway University on August 15.

John Haven III, executive director of college administration and chief financial officer at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, will become vice chancellor for finance and administration the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire on September 24.

Marti Heil, former vice president for development and alumni relations at Virginia Commonwealth University, will become vice president for university advancement at Michigan State University on October 3.

John Zacharek, executive director of development at Binghamton University, has been named vice president for development at State University of New York College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill.

Henry Nemcik, chief executive and president of the University of New Mexico Foundation since 2010, plans to retire in 2019.

Phoebe McCormick Lickwar, founder and principal of Forge Landscape Architecture and an associate professor at the University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design, has been named an associate professor of landscape architecture at the University of Texas at Austin.

Ambassador Wendy R. Sherman, former U.S. undersecretary of state for political affairs, will become a professor of the practice of public leadership and the director of the Center for Public Leadership at the Harvard University Kennedy School in January.

Sandra E. Taylor, founder and president of the consulting firm, Sustainable Business International, and a former senior vice president for corporate responsibility at Starbucks, has been named a professor of socially responsible business at Chatham University.

Awards

C. David Allis, a professor at Rockefeller University, and Michael Grunstein, a professor of biological chemistry at the University of California at Los Angeles, received the 2018 Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award. They are recognized for their work in discovering and explaining how the proteins that package DNA within chromosomes influence gene expression.

Rita Charon, chair and professor of medical humanities and ethics and professor of medicine at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center, has been selected by the National Endowment for the Humanities to deliver the 2018 Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities.

Joan Argetsinger Steitz, a professor of molecular biophysics and biochemistry at Yale University, received the 2018 Lasker-Koshland Award for Special Achievement in Medical Science for her decades of work in her field.

S. James Gates Jr., a professor of physics at Brown University, has been named vice president and president-elect of the American Physical Society.

Susan Heegaard, a senior consultant for HCM Strategists, state policy adviser for the Lumina Foundation Strategy Labs, and former director of the Minnesota Office of Higher Education, has been named president of the Midwestern Higher Education Compact.

Deaths

Deborah Hatton, professor emerita of special education at Vanderbilt University, died on September 4. She was 65.

Erik Hauri, a staff scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science since 1994, died of cancer on September 5. He was 52. During his time with Carnegie, Hauri led the team that discovered water in the Moon.

Robert L. Scott, professor emeritus of speech and communication studies at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, died on July 26. He was 90.

Martin Shubik, professor emeritus of mathematical institutional economics at Yale University, died on August 22. He was 92. Shubik started as a professor of economics at Yale in 1963, and wrote Game Theory in the Social Sciences: Concepts and Solutions (MIT Press, 1982) among many other books and articles.
