Transitions: Sweet Briar College and the U. of North Carolina at Asheville Make Interim Leaders Permanent

CHIEF EXECUTIVES
Appointments
The Rev. Robert A. Dowd, vice president and associate provost for interdisciplinary initiatives at the University of Notre Dame, has been named president of the university. He will succeed the Rev. John I. Jenkins, who plans to step down at the end of the academic year.

Winston Erevelles, a professor of industrial engineering and former dean of the School of Science, Engineering, and Technology at St. Mary’s University, in Texas, has been named president of the university.

Chance Glenn, provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Houston-Victoria, has been named president of Buffalo State University.

Mary Pope Maybank Hutson has been named president of Sweet Briar College after serving as interim president since July.

J. Larry Jameson, dean of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and executive vice president for the university’s health system, has been named interim president following M. Elizabeth Magill’s resignation.

Elizabeth Mauch, president of Bethany College, in Kansas, has been named chancellor of the Vermont State Colleges system.

Latha Ramchand, executive vice chancellor and provost at the University of Missouri at Columbia, has been named executive vice president and chancellor of Indiana University at Indianapolis.

Leslie Rodriguez-McClellon, vice president for community relations and government affairs at Saint Augustine’s University, has been named acting president after Christine McPhail’s dismissal.

Adiam Tsegai has been named president of the State University of New York’s Erie Community College after serving as officer-in-charge since November 2022.

Kimberly van Noort, interim chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Asheville, has been named to the post permanently.

Resignations
Paul LeBlanc, president of Southern New Hampshire University, will step down in June. Lisa Marsh Ryerson, provost at the university, will succeed him as president.

Retirements
Doug Kristensen, chancellor of the University of Nebraska at Kearney, plans to retire after 22 years.

Pranesh Aswath, senior vice provost for academic planning and policy at the University of Texas at Arlington, has been named provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at Texas State University.

Rajalingam Dakshinamurthy has been named provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at the University of Texas-Permian Basin after serving as interim provost for seven months.

Timothy Huebner, professor of history and former associate provost at Rhodes College, has been named provost and vice president for academic affairs.

Matt Martens, senior vice provost at the University of Missouri, has been named interim provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs.

Michael A. Palladino, vice chancellor for academic affairs at Bloomfield College of Montclair State University, has been named provost and vice president for academic affairs at Stockton University.

Ronna Vanderslice, vice president for academic affairs at Cameron University, has been named vice provost for academic affairs in the Oklahoma State University system and interim provost at Oklahoma State University at Oklahoma City.

Joy K. Ward, interim provost at Case Western Reserve University, has been named to the post permanently.

Michael Zieg has been named provost and vice president for academic affairs at Slippery Rock University after serving as interim provost since April 2022.

Timothy H. Dellit has been named executive vice president for medical affairs and dean of the School of Medicine at the University of Washington and chief executive of UW Medicine, positions he has held on an interim basis since July 2022.

Christopher Manning, vice president and chief inclusion and diversity officer at the University of Southern California, has been named vice president for student affairs and campus diversity at San Diego State University.

Romando A. Nash, associate vice president for student-life services at the University of Nevada at Reno, has been named vice chancellor for student affairs at Washington State University at Pullman.

Curtis Reynolds, vice president for business affairs at the University of Florida, has been named vice president for business and finance and chief financial officer at Baylor University.

Stephen R. St. Onge, executive director of auxiliary operations at California State Polytechnic University at Humboldt, has been named vice president for enrollment management and student affairs at Kutztown University.

Charles Hoslet, vice chancellor for university relations at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, plans to retire at the end of the 2023-24 academic year.

Robert Lippert, vice president for finance and business affairs at Fresno Pacific University, in California, plans to retire.

Diane Lopez, vice president and general counsel at Harvard University, plans to retire at the end of February.

Joyce deJong, a professor and founding chair of the department of pathology at the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine, has been named dean of the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Theodore DeWeese has been named dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and chief executive of Johns Hopkins Medicine after serving in the role on an interim basis since 2022.

Roger Fairfax, dean of the Washington College of Law at American University, will step down at the end of the year to become dean of the Howard University School of Law.

Meredith Gronski, chair of the occupational therapy department and director of the Doctor of Occupational Therapy program at Methodist University, has been named dean of the university’s College of Health Sciences and Human Services.

Janet A. Guyden, associate vice president for research and dean of the College of Professional Studies’ School of Graduate Studies and Research at Grambling State University, in Louisiana, has been named interim dean of the Graduate School at Bowie State University, in Maryland.

Tracy Mulvaney, an associate professor in the department of educational counseling and leadership at Monmouth University, has been named dean of the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

Mary Rezac, dean of the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture at Washington State University, has been named dean of the School of Engineering at the University of Kansas.

Kevin Sanders, director of the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music at the University of Memphis, has been named dean of the School of Music at Baylor University.

Karen Jones, a professor of animal science in the College of Agricultural, Life, and Physical Sciences at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, has been named associate dean and director of the Graduate School.

Niamh Minion Larson, acting director of the Education Abroad and Exchanges Office at the University of Kentucky, has been named executive director of the office.

Holly Rachel, president of the Nashville chapter of Blacks in Technology, became executive director of the Darrell S. Freeman Sr. Incubation and Innovation Center at Fisk University.

David Simpson, an associate teaching professor at Northeastern University, has been named associate dean of diversity and inclusion in the Eberly College of Science at Pennsylvania State University at University Park.

Rosemarie Wesson, associate provost for research at City College of the City University of New York, has been named associate vice chancellor and university vice provost for research at the City University of New York.

DEATHS
Julius W. Becton Jr., former president of Prairie View A&M University, died on November 28. He was 97.

David Del Tredici, a composer who taught at the City College of New York from 1984 to 2015, died on November 18. He was 86. Del Tredici also taught at Boston, Harvard, and Yale Universities.

Guy Stern, a professor of German who served as vice president and provost for academic affairs at Wayne State University, died on December 7. He was 101. Stern taught at Denison University and the University of Maryland, among other colleges. At the time of his death, he was director of the International Institute of the Righteous at the Zekelman Holocaust Center.

Michael H. Stone, a former professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and author of The Anatomy of Evil (2009), died on December 6. He was 90.

H. Mebane (Meb) Turner, former president of the University of Baltimore, died on November 19. He was 92. Turner led the university from 1969 to 2002.
