Appointments

Heidi M. Anderson, special assistant to the president and former provost and vice president for academic affairs at Texas A&M University at Kingsville, will become president of University of Maryland-Eastern Shore on September 1. She will replace Mickey Burnim, who has served as interim president since Juliette Bell stepped down on July 1.

Kenneth Boham, former interim president at Martin Community College and the retired president of Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute, has been named interim president of James Sprunt Community College, in North Carolina. He will replace Lawrence Rouse, who will become president of Pitt Community College on August 1.

Chief executives

Appointments

Heidi M. Anderson, special assistant to the president and former provost and vice president for academic affairs at Texas A&M University at Kingsville, will become president of University of Maryland-Eastern Shore on September 1. She will replace Mickey Burnim, who has served as interim president since Juliette Bell stepped down on July 1.

E. Joseph Lee II, vice president for enrollment management at the University of Maine at Orono, will become interim president of Spring Hill College on August 1. Christopher Puto, who had led the college since 2015, became president emeritus on June 1.

Andrew D. Martin, dean of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, will become chancellor of Washington University in St. Louis on June 1, 2019. He will succeed Mark S. Wrighton, who plans to step down.

Gregory McLeod, provost and interim dean of health professions at Thomas Nelson Community College, will become president of Edgecombe Community College in mid-August. He will replace Mark Lorence, who has served as interim president since June 1.

Retirements

Bruce D. Benson, president of the University of Colorado system since 2008, plans to retire in July 2019.

Frederik Ohles, president of Nebraska Wesleyan University since 2007, plans to retire on July 1, 2019.

Gerald P. Koocher, dean of the College of Science and Health at DePaul University, will become the first provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Quincy College on September 10.

Tod A. Laursen, president of Khalifa University, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, has been named senior vice chancellor and provost at the State University of New York system.

Ashley R. Lomery, assistant vice president for development at Temple University, will become chief development officer at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts on August 13.

Claire Machamer, chief technology officer and interim chief marketing officer at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, has been named the first vice chancellor for strategic communications.

Theresa Travis, senior associate vice president for development and alumni relations at Saint Joseph’s University, in Philadelphia, has been named vice president for university advancement at Widener University.

Laura Troendle, director of budget and finance for the College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University, will become vice president for administration, finance and treasurer at Pitzer College on July 23.

Resignations

Carolyn Ainslie, vice president for finance and treasurer at Princeton University, will step down to become chief financial officer of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation on October 1.

Gert-Jan de Vreede, a professor of information systems and decision sciences at the University of South Florida Muma College of Business, has been named interim dean of the College of Business at University of South Florida-Sarasota/Manatee.

David Elrod, vice president for business development at Jacobs Engineering, will become dean of the Raymond B. Jones College of Engineering at Lipscomb University on August 1.

Christine E. Kasper, a professor of nursing at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and program manager for university affiliations in the Veterans Affairs Office of Nursing Services, has been named dean of the College of Nursing at University of New Mexico.

Retirements

Dana Skinner, director of athletics at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell since 1995, plans to retire in September.

Caroline D. Ciraolo, former acting assistant attorney general of the Department of Justice Tax Division and a partner at the D.C.-based tax law firm, Kostelanetz & Fink, has joined the faculty of the University of Baltimore Graduate Tax Program.

Resignations

Robert Kurzban, professor and former chair of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, resigned in early July. Kurzban was the subject of a university investigation into allegations that he had inappropriate romantic relationships with students he was overseeing. He has denied allegations that he engaged in behavior that violated university policy.

Tenure awards

The following professors were awarded tenure at their institutions. If a faculty rank is not included, the faculty member is being promoted to the rank of associate professor. The changes take effect on varying dates.

James X. Sullivan, a professor of economics at Notre Dame University, has been named a member of the U.S. Commission on Social Impact Partnerships.

Retirements

Nancy Hansel, president of the New American Colleges & Universities, plans to retire on June 30, 2019.

Deaths

Robert George Gilpin Jr., professor emeritus of international affairs and politics at Princeton University, died on June 20 in Waterbury, Vermont. He was 87. Gilpin joined the faculty of the university in 1962 and earned emeritus status in 1998. He wrote several books, one of which, The Political Economy of International Relations (Princeton University Press, 1987), won the Woodrow Wilson Foundation Award in 1988.

Burton Richter, professor emeritus in the physical sciences at Stanford University, died on July 18. He was 87. Richter served as director of the Department of Energy’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory from 2007 to 2012. He received the 1976 Nobel Prize in physics with Samuel Ting for their discovery of the J/psi, a new subatomic particle.
