Transitions: U. of North Dakota Selects President, New Provost at the U. of Kansas

Chief executives

Appointments

Brig. Gen. Andrew Armacost, a retired dean of faculty at the U.S. Air Force Academy, has been named the next president of the University of North Dakota. He will succeed Mark Kennedy, who left to become president of the University of Colorado system.

Daniel Diermeier, provost at the University of Chicago, will become chancellor of Vanderbilt University on July 1. He will replace Susan R. Wente, who has served as interim chancellor since Nicholas S. Zeppos stepped down in August.

Daniel F. Mahony, president of Winthrop University, has been named president of the Southern Illinois University system. He will replace J. Kevin Dorsey, who has served as interim president since Randy J. Dunn stepped down in 2018.

Kyle J. Stafford, vice president for university advancement at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, will become president of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College on January 6. He will replace R. Mark Rasor, who has served as interim president since Jeff Hale’s retirement.

Leslie Ward, interim president of the Vermont College of Fine Arts since July, has been named to the post permanently. She will become president in July 2020.

Resignations

Raynard S. Kington, president of Grinnell College since 2010, plans to step down at the end of the academic year to become head of Phillips Academy, a boarding school in Massachusetts.

Retirements

Mauri A. Ditzler, president of Albion College since 2014, plans to retire from that role at the end of the 2019-20 academic year. He expects to then lead special projects for the college.

Patricia A. Gentile, president of North Shore Community College since 2014, plans to retire on July 6.

Dianne F. Harrison, president of California State University at Northridge since 2012, plans to retire on June 30.

Clyde Muse, president of Hinds Community College since 1978, plans to retire on June 30.

Barbara Bichelmeyer, provost and executive vice chancellor and former interim chancellor at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, has been named provost and executive vice chancellor at the University of Kansas.

Kimo Ah Yun, acting provost at Marquette University since October 2018, has been named to the post permanently.

Aaron Basko, assistant vice president for enrollment management and career services at Salisbury University, will become vice president for enrollment management at Sweet Briar College on January 15.

F. Charles Brunicardi, a professor and chair of the department of surgery in the College of Medicine and Life Sciences at the University of Toledo, has been named senior vice president and dean of the College of Medicine at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center.

Manuel Cuevas-Trisan, chief human-resources officer and corporate vice president at Motorola Solutions, in Chicago, will become vice president for human resources and chief human resource officer at Northwestern University on January 6.

Leslie Darling, chief executive officer of the Chicago Infrastructure Trust, will become executive vice president and general counsel at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago on January 8.

Debra L. Fitzsimons, vice chancellor for business services and chief financial officer and interim chancellor and chief executive at South Orange County Community College District, has been named vice president for administration and finance at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Kelly Fox, executive vice chancellor and chief operating officer at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has been named executive vice president for administration and finance at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

K. Craig Kent, dean of the College of Medicine and vice president for health sciences at Ohio State University, will become executive vice president for health affairs at the University of Virginia on February 1.

Allen Y. Lew, president of the Washington Architectural Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Washington, D.C., chapter of the American Institute of Architects, has been named senior vice chancellor for facilities planning, construction, and management at the City University of New York.

Clarence (Tres) Mullis, executive director of university development at Washington and Lee University, has been named vice president for development, alumni, and parent relations at Gettysburg College.

Retirements

Earl E. Dowling, vice president for institutional advancement at College of DuPage, plans to retire on January 31.

Mung Chiang, a professor of electrical and computer engineering and dean of the College of Engineering at Purdue University at West Lafayette, will step down for a year to serve as science and technology adviser to the United States Secretary of State.

Jean-Francois Coget, associate dean of academic programs in the Orfalea College of Business at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, has been named dean of the School of Business and Economics at Sonoma State University.

Kevin Finn, associate dean of the School of Health Sciences at Merrimack College, will become dean of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences and director of clinical partnerships at Colby-Sawyer College in January.

Jill Fort, a professor and chair of the social-sciences and humanities division at Newman University, will become dean of the School of Business in January.

Marketa Marvanova, chair of the department of pharmacy practice at North Dakota State University, will become dean of the Skaggs School of Pharmacy at the University of Montana on February 24.

Susan L. Perkins, curator and professor of microbial genomics at the American Museum of Natural History, in New York, will become dean of science at the City College of City University of New York on January 6.

Michael Sawyer, interim dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at the University of Central Missouri since May 2018, has been named to the post permanently.

Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine at the University of Southern California.

J. Cooper Cutting, an associate professor and associate chair of psychology at Illinois State University, has been named assistant vice president for academic planning.

Russell Ganim, director of the division of world languages, literatures, and cultures in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Iowa, has been named associate provost and dean of international programs.

Kathleen M. Gill, director of planning and assessment at the New York Institute of Technology, has been named director of assessment at Touro College of Law.

Amie Grills, a professor of counseling psychology at Boston University, has been named associate dean of faculty affairs and research in the Wheelock College of Education and Human Development.

Tanya Jachimiak, Title IX and Section 504 coordinator at Wake Forest University, will become associate vice president of the Office for Civil Rights and Title IX Education and Compliance at Michigan State University on February 3.

Janey A. Roach, director of faculty affairs at Shadyside School of Nursing at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, has been named director of the Charles Jr. and Betty Johnson School of Nursing at Grove City College.

Francisco Javier Rodríguez-Suárez, a professor of architecture at the University of Puerto Rico, has been named director of the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Virginia Tomlinson, chief technology officer at Linfield College, will become associate vice president and chief information officer at Central Washington University on January 2.

Lisa Toms, a professor of marketing and former dean of the College of Business at Arkansas Tech University, will become vice provost for academic programs and services at the University of Central Missouri on January 2.

Faculty

Retirements

Mildred Robinson, a professor of law at the University of Virginia, plans to retire after more than 30 years as a member of the faculty. She was the first African American woman to become a tenured professor at the university’s School of Law.

Jonathan H. Millen, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of New England, has been named president-elect of the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences.

Jonell Sanchez, vice president for education solutions at the National Student Clearinghouse, has been named president of learning at ACT.

Resignations

Susan Desmond-Hellmann, chief executive of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation since 2014, plans to step down. Before joining the foundation, she was the first female chancellor of the University of California at San Francisco.

Deaths

Jeff Appel, director of policy liaison and implementation in the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Federal Student Aid, died on November 29. He was 56. Appel joined the department in 2011, and spent his career in federal government focused on higher education.

William H. Francisco Jr., a professor emeritus of theater at Wesleyan University, in Connecticut, died on November 21. He was 86.

Hector Garcia-Molina, a professor of computer science and of electrical engineering at Stanford University, died of cancer on November 25. He was 65. Prior to joining the faculty at Stanford in 1992, Garcia-Molina taught at Princeton University.

Steven J. Klein, a former vice president for enrollment management at Albion College, died on November 29. He was 64. Klein also served as dean of admissions at Wabash College for 17 years.

David VanBuskirk, a professor emeritus of psychiatry at the University of Vermont, died on November 4. He was 87.
