Brig. Gen. Andrew Armacost,a retired dean of faculty at the U.S. Air Force Academy, has been named the next president of the University of North Dakota. He will succeed Mark Kennedy, who left to become president of the University of Colorado system.
Daniel Diermeier,provost at the University of Chicago, will become chancellor of Vanderbilt University on July 1. He will replace Susan R. Wente, who has served as interim chancellor since Nicholas S. Zeppos stepped down in August.
Daniel F. Mahony,president of Winthrop University, has been named president of the Southern Illinois University system. He will replace J. Kevin Dorsey, who has served as interim president since Randy J. Dunn stepped down in 2018.
Kyle J. Stafford,vice president for university advancement at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, will become president of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College on January 6. He will replace R. Mark Rasor, who has served as interim president since Jeff Hale’s retirement.
Leslie Ward,interim president of the Vermont College of Fine Arts since July, has been named to the post permanently. She will become president in July 2020.
Resignations
Raynard S. Kington,president of Grinnell College since 2010, plans to step down at the end of the academic year to become head of Phillips Academy, a boarding school in Massachusetts.
Retirements
Mauri A. Ditzler,president of Albion College since 2014, plans to retire from that role at the end of the 2019-20 academic year. He expects to then lead special projects for the college.

Deaths
Jeff Appel, director of policy liaison and implementation in the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Federal Student Aid, died on November 29. He was 56. Appel joined the department in 2011, and spent his career in federal government focused on higher education.

William H. Francisco Jr.,a professor emeritus of theater at Wesleyan University, in Connecticut, died on November 21. He was 86.
Hector Garcia-Molina,a professor of computer science and of electrical engineering at Stanford University, died of cancer on November 25. He was 65. Prior to joining the faculty at Stanford in 1992, Garcia-Molina taught at Princeton University.
Steven J. Klein,a former vice president for enrollment management at Albion College, died on November 29. He was 64. Klein also served as dean of admissions at Wabash College for 17 years.
David VanBuskirk,a professor emeritus of psychiatry at the University of Vermont, died on November 4. He was 87.
