Stephanie J. Rickard, a professor of government at London School of Economics, is the recipient of the APSA-IPSA Theodore J. The Blavatnik Family Foundation and the New York Academy of Sciences announced the 2019 national laureates, who are honored for their work in life sciences, physical sciences and engineering, and chemistry. This year is the first time all three laureates are women.
Emily Balskus, a professor of chemistry and chemical biology at Harvard University, has been named the laureate in chemistry for her work on the chemistry of the gut microbiome and its role in human health and disease.

Heather J. Lynch, an associate professor of ecology and evolution at Stony Brook University, has been named the laureate in life sciences for her work with penguin colonies to predict the effects of climate change on population.
Ana Maria Rey, an associate research professor of physics at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has been named the laureate in physical sciences and engineering for her work in the field of theoretical atomic, molecular, and optical physics.

Mateo Arteaga,director of the Education Opportunity Centers at Central Washington University, received the Walter O. Mason TRIO Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council for Opportunity in Education.
Deaths

David R. Colburn,a professor of history, director of the Bob Graham Center for Public Service, and provost emeritus at the University of Florida, died on September 18. He was 76. Colburn arrived at the university in 1972 and served in many administrative roles. He also published 14 books, including The African American Heritage of Florida (University Press of Florida, 1995), co-edited with Jane Landers.
N. Dean Evans,the first president of Burlington County College, now know at Rowan College at Burlington County, died on September 10. He was 94. Evans served as president of the college from 1967 until 1976. He was also the founding president of Warren County Community College in 1981.
Annette Kolodny,a former professor of American literature and culture and dean of the College of Humanities at the University of Arizona, died on September 11. She was 78. Kolodny was a leader in the field of ecofeminism and wrote extensively on the subject, including The Lay of the Land: Metaphor as Experience and History in American Life and Letters (University of North Carolina Press, 1975) and The Land Before Her: Fantasy and Experience of the American Frontiers, 1630—1860 (University of North Carolina Press, 1984). She also taught at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the University of British Columbia, the University of Maryland at College Park, and Yale University.
Edward H. Peeples,a civil-rights activist and associate professor emeritus of preventive medicine and community health at Virginia Commonwealth University, died on September 7. He was 84. Peeples taught at Virginia Commonwealth from 1968 until 1995, was the first scholar in residence for the university’s honors program, and helped found the African American studies program. He also served on the Commission on Human Relations for the City of Richmond and received the Civil Rights Unsung Hero award from the Richmond branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in 2015.
