Transitions: U. of Southern California Names New President, Chief of U. of Missouri to Retire

Chief executives

Appointments

Steve Currall, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Southern Methodist University, will become president of the University of South Florida on July 1. He will succeed Judy Genshaft, who plans to retire.

Susan Elrod, provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater, will become chancellor of Indiana University at South Bend on July 1. She will replace Jann Joseph, who has served as interim chancellor since Terry L. Allison stepped down in July 2018.

Carol L. Folt, former chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will become president of the University of Southern California on July 1. She will replace Wanda M. Austin, who has served as interim president since C.L. Max Nikias stepped down in August 2018.

Deborah Fox, director of business operations and management for the Independence Unified School District 446, in Kansas, will become president of Highland Community College on July 1. She will succeed David Reist, who plans to retire.

Joe Gilgour, dean of student and academic support services at State Fair Community College, will become president of Mineral Area College on July 1. He will replace Shirley Hofstetter, who has served as interim president since Steven Kurtz retired.

Jessica Howard, president of the Southeast Campus of Portland Community College, will become president of Chemeketa Community College on July 8. She will succee Julie Huckestein, who plans to retire.

Kumara Jayasuriya, provost and vice president for academic affairs at West Virginia State University, will become president of Southwest Minnesota State University on July 1. He will succeed Connie J. Gores, who plans to retire.

Marc Levin, interim president and chief executive of Maryland University of Integrative Health, has been named to the post permanently.

William Mullaney, vice president for academic affairs at Bergen Community College, will become president of Corning Community College on July 1. He will succeed Katherine Douglas, who plans to retire.

Ellen J. Neufeldt, vice president for student engagement and enrollment services at Old Dominion University, will become president of California State University at San Marcos in July. She will succeed Karen Haynes, who plans to retire.

Charles E. Patterson, senior adviser for executive outreach in the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Federal Student Aid, will become president of Mansfield University of Pennsylvania on July 1. He will replace Peter Fackler, who has served as interim president since Scott Barton left to become senior vice president for administration and finance at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania.

Carmen J. Walters, executive vice president for enrollment management and student success at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, has been named president of Tougaloo College. She will succeed Beverly Wade Hogan, who plans to retire on June 30.

Jenifer K. Ward, provost and dean of the college at Centenary College of Louisiana, will become president of Luther College on July 1. She will succeed Paula J. Carlson, who plans to retire.

Jermaine Williams, vice president for student affairs at North Shore Community College, will become president of Nassau Community College on July 1. He will succeed W. Hubert Keen.

Resignations

F. Dominic Dottavio, president of Tarleton State University since 2008, plans to step down and return to the faculty of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences in August.

Major Gen. Walter T. Lord, president of Valley Forge Military Academy and College since April 2018, stepped down earlier this month.

Retirements

Thomas F. George, chancellor of the University of Missouri at St. Louis since 2003, plans to retire on September 1.

Christine S. Cozzens, a professor of English and director of the Center for Writing and Speaking at Agnes Scott College, has been named interim vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college.

Paul Gore, dean of the College of Professional Sciences at Xavier University, will become vice president for academic affairs and provost at Bellarmine University on July 1.

Beth Fisher Ingram, former provost and vice president for academic affairs at North Dakota State University, will become executive vice president and provost at Northern Illinois University on May 16.

Tamara Jhashi, dean of the School of Liberal Arts at Mercy College, will become senior vice president and provost at New Jersey City University on June 3.

Lorna M. Ricotta, executive director of the Fayetteville Technical Community College Foundation, has been named vice chancellor for institutional advancement at Fayetteville State University.

Michele Alexandre, associate dean for faculty development and intellectual life at the University of Mississippi School of Law, has been named the first African-American dean of the College of Law at Stetson University.

Somnath Bhattacharya, interim dean of the College of Business and Management at the University of Illinois at Springfield, has been named to the post permanently.

Bernadette Boden-Albala, senior associate dean of research and program development in the College of Global Public Health at New York University, has been named director and founding dean of the School of Population Health at the University of California at Irvine.

Karen Bull, associate dean of academic affairs at Syracuse University, will become dean of online programs at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro on July 8.

Andrew J. Butler, a professor of physical therapy and associate dean of research at the Byrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions at Georgia State University, has been named dean of the School of Health Professions at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Julie DeLoia, dean of the college and professor of arts and sciences at Jefferson College of Health Sciences, has been named dean of graduate studies at Hollins University.

Ian Ferguson, a professor of electrical and computer engineering and former dean and vice provost in the College of Engineering and Computing at Missouri University of Science and Technology, will become dean of the Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology at Kennesaw State University on August 15.

Trenton Gould, interim dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Southern Mississippi, will become permanent dean on April 1.

Melissa Gresalfi, an associate professor of mathematics education and learning sciences at Vanderbilt University, will become dean of the university’s Martha Rivers Ingram Commons on July 1.

Teresa Reed, a professor of music and associate dean of the Henry Kendall College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tulsa, has been named dean of the School of Music at the University of Louisville.

Mark Rosenblatt, a professor of ophthalmology and director of the Margaret M. Dyson Vision Research Institute at Weill Cornell Medical College, has been named dean of the College of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Elaine L. Smith, interim dean of the College of Nursing and Public Health at Adelphi University, has been named to the post permanently.

Kathi A. Vosevich, associate provost and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Shorter University, will become dean of the School of Humanities at Lindenwood University on July 1.

Mei Wei, associate dean of research and graduate education in the School of Engineering at the University of Connecticut, will become dean of the Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ College of Engineering and Technology at Ohio University on July 15.

Ann Larson, dean of the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Louisville, will step down to become a special assistant to the president on April 8.

Rodney Ellis, vice chair for strategic affairs and director of genitourinary oncology, brachytherapy and advanced image guided radiology in the department of radiation oncology at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center, will become chair of the department of radiation oncology at Pennsylvania State University-Milton S. Hershey Medical Center College of Medicine on July 1.

Danny Bilson, chair of the interactive media and game division in the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California, has been named director of USC Games, a collaboration between the interactive media and game division and the Viterbi School of Engineering computer science department.

Corey Cook, dean of the School of Public Service and a professor of political science at Boise State University, will become vice provost for academic programs and planning at Saint Mary’s College of California on July 1.

Diane Foster, a professor of mechanical and ocean engineering at the University of New Hampshire, has been named director of the School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering.

James Mattis, former U.S. secretary of defense in the current administration, will become a fellow in the Hoover Institution at Stanford University on May 1.

Jennifer Meka, an assistant professor of psychiatry and humanities at the Pennsylvania State University-Milton S. John R. Broderick, president of Old Dominion University, has been named a recipient of the 2019 President’s Award.

Berenecea Johnson Eanes, vice president for student affairs at California State University at Fullerton, has been named the recipient of the 2019 Scott Goodnight Award for Outstanding Performance as a Dean.

Niki Fjeldal, director of new student transition programs and university testing at Indiana State University, has been named the recipient of the 2019 Doris Michiko Ching Award for Excellence as a Student Affairs Professional.

Henry Gee, vice president for student services at Rio Hondo College, has been named a recipient of the 2019 Fred Turner Award for Outstanding Service to NASPA.

Alex Gonzalez, university registrar at the University of New Mexico, has been named a posthumous recipient of the 2019 Fred Turner Award for Outstanding Service to NASPA.

Janet Napolitano, president of the University of California system, has been named a recipient of the 2019 President’s Award.

Rajiv Vinnakota, co-founder and board director of the SEED Foundation and executive vice president of the Youth & Engagement division at the Aspen Institute, has been named president of the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation.

Deaths

Judy Bolton, professor and head of medicinal chemistry and pharmacognosy at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy, died from complications relating to breast cancer on March 5. She was 56.

Parmender Mehta, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, died on March 3. He was 65.

Subbiah (Ram) Ramalingam, professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, died on February 9. He was 69.

Anita Silvers, professor of philosophy at San Francisco State University, died on March 14. She was 79. Silvers, who was disabled by polio as a child, advocated for disability rights and co-authored multiple books on the subject, including Disability, Difference, Discrimination: Perspectives on Justice in Bioethics and Public Policy (Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, 1998) with David Wasserman and Mary B. Mahowald. She joined the university faculty in 1967 and in 1980 was appointed to serve on the National Council for the Humanities by President Carter.

Paul Talalay, director of the Laboratory for Molecular Pharmacology at the Johns Hopkins University, died on March 10. He was 95. Talalay joined the university in 1963 as a professor of pharmacology and chair of the department of pharmacology and experimental therapeutics. Since 1973, he lead what is now called the Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chemoprotection Center where he focused his work on cancer prevention, which lead to his well-known findings on the health benefits of cruciferous vegetables, particularly broccoli.

Douglass Wholey, professor emeritus of organizations and management in the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, died on February 6.

She had stepped down from that post and shifted to a faculty role shortly before she was appointed as the next executive vice president and provost at Northern Illinois University.
