Transitions: U. System of Maryland Names Next Leader

Appointments, resignations, retirements, awards, deaths

Chief executives

Appointments

Georj Lewis, interim president of Atlanta Metropolitan State College since July, has been named to the post permanently. He became interim president after Gary McGaha retired.

Joseph Odenwald, vice president for student services at Southwestern Michigan College, has been named the next president. He will succeed David Mathews, who plans to retire.

Chief executives

Appointments

Georj Lewis, interim president of Atlanta Metropolitan State College since July, has been named to the post permanently. He became interim president after Gary McGaha retired.

Joseph Odenwald, vice president for student services at Southwestern Michigan College, has been named the next president. He will succeed David Mathews, who plans to retire.

Jay A. Perman, president of the University of Maryland at Baltimore, has been named the next chancellor of the University System of Maryland. He will succeed Robert L. Caret, who plans to step down by June 2020.

Resignations

Paul Conn, president of Lee University since 1986, plans to step down in August 2020 and make a transition to the role of chancellor.

Retirements

Rick Caulfield, chancellor of the University of Alaska-Southeast since 2015, plans to retire in June 2020.

Chief academic officers

Appointments

Mary L. Coffey, senior associate dean at Pomona College, will become provost and dean of faculty at Hobart and William Smith Colleges on January 15.

Scott A. Strobel, vice president for West Campus planning and program development, deputy provost for teaching and learning, and vice provost for science initiatives at Yale University, will become provost on January 1.

Peter Ashley, director of communications and annual giving at the Center for Hospice Care in Mishawaka, Ind., has been named vice president for communications and marketing at Hanover College.

Collette Creppell, university architect at Brown University, will become vice president for campus planning and design at Chapman University on December 3.

Christine Davis, vice provost for student affairs at Florida SouthWestern State College, will become vice chancellor for student affairs at Saint Louis Community College on January 6.

Dawn Koenning, founder and president of Clarity Consultants, a firm that works with nonprofit organizations, has been named chief development officer of university advancement at University of St. Thomas, in Texas.

Susan Martinis, interim vice chancellor for research and innovation at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign since September 2017, has been named to the post permanently.

Lori Ann Vinson Summers, assistant vice president for university development in health sciences at the University of South Carolina at Columbia, became vice president for institutional advancement at Newberry College on November 11.

Mohan Suntha, president and chief executive of the University of Maryland Medical Center, in Baltimore, has been named president and chief executive of the University of Maryland Medical System.

Colleen Walker, vice president for university partnerships at Academic Partnerships, an online-services provider in higher education, has been named chief executive of the Auraria Higher Education Center. The center is a Colorado state organization that oversees the shared services and facilities of the Auraria Campus, a partnership among the Community College of Denver, the University of Colorado at Denver, and Metropolitan State University of Denver.

Maria Watson, associate vice president for development at the University of Southern California, will become vice president for advancement at Pomona College on January 6.

Appointments

Angela Lauer Chong, associate vice president for student affairs at Florida State University, will become dean of students, in addition to her current role, on December 13.

Susan Fiorito, director of the Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship at Florida State University, has been named the dean now that the school has transitioned to the Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship.

Danny Hubbard, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Grambling State University, has been named interim dean of the college.

Gaëtane Jean-Marie, dean of the College of Education at the University of Northern Iowa, has been named dean of the College of Education at Rowan University.

Lisa Yvonne Stephens, director of the Radiologic Technology Program at Albany Technical College, has been named dean of health-care/business technology.

Thomas Traynor, interim dean of the Raj Soin College of Business at Wright State University, has been named to the post permanently.

Donald White, head of the management and marketing department in the College of Business at Grambling State University, has been named interim dean of the college.

Resignations

Nitin Nohria, dean of the Harvard Business School, plans to step down in June 2020.

Katrin Hinrichs, a professor of veterinary physiology and pharmacology and large animal clinical sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Science at Texas A&M University at College Station, has been named chair of the department of clinical studies at New Bolton Center in the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Derek Hoeferlin, an associate professor in the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, has been named chair of the landscape architecture and urban design programs.

Azer Bestavros, founding director of the Rafik B. Hariri Institute for Computing and Computational Science and Engineering at Boston University, has been named associate provost for computing and data sciences, leading the university’s newly formed Faculty of Computing and Data Sciences.

Tiffany Davis, director of staff development and learning solutions for the State of Maryland judicial system, has been named director of workforce and talent development at Saint Louis Community College.

Sarah Ferguson, associate vice president for the Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, has been named vice provost for faculties and academic affairs.

Jeff Gleim, associate vice chancellor for alumni relations at the University of Pittsburgh, has been named associate vice chancellor for development and alumni relations at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and executive director of the SIU Alumni Association.

Robin Phillips, director of human resources for KIPP St. Louis Public Schools, a charter-school network, has been named associate vice chancellor for human resources at Saint Louis Community College.

Retirements

Stephen Bronner, a professor of political science at Rutgers University at New Brunswick, has retired. The university was investigating allegations of sexual misconduct and harassment by Bronner. Bronner had denied any misconduct.

Organizations

Appointments

OJ Oleka, chief of staff for the Kentucky State Treasurer, has been named president of the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities.

Deaths

Jameson Doig, a professor emeritus of politics and public affairs at Princeton University, died on October 19. He was 86. Doig joined the faculty in 1961 and made the transition to emeritus status in 2004. After retiring from Princeton, he became a research professor in government at Dartmouth College.

Jack Evans Sr., president emeritus of Southwestern Christian College, died on November 1. He was 81. Evans was the first African American to serve as president of the college, which he led from 1967 until 2016. In 1973, under his leadership, the college earned its full accreditation.

Robert Ewigleben, who was president of Ferris State University from 1971 until 1984, died on November 3. He was 91. Ewigleben also served as president of San Mateo Community College and a vice president at Humboldt State University.

David B. Hinshaw, a former dean of the School of Medicine at Loma Linda University, died on October 30. He was 95. Hinshaw led the medical school from 1962 to 1975, then served as dean of the School of Medicine at Oral Roberts University before returning as president of Loma Linda University Medical Center from 1988 to 1994. During his time at Loma Linda, Hinshaw helped establish the current medical-center campus.

Sister John Miriam Jones, a former associate provost at the University of Notre Dame, died on November 3. She was 95. Jones became assistant provost in 1972 and was assigned to integrate the first class of women into the previously all-male institution. She left Notre Dame in 1989 and later served as dean of the college at Mount St. Joseph University from 1997 to 2001.

Jonathan Kleinbard, a former vice president for community relations and university news at the University of Chicago, died on October 16. He was 80.

Donald Stanton, a former president of Adrian College, died on October 30. He was 87. Stanton led the college from 1978 to 1988.
