Brian Johnson, interim vice president for strategic planning and institutional effectiveness and assistant provost/assistant vice president for academic affairs at Austin Peay State University, will become president of Tuskegee University on June 15. The previous president, Gilbert L. Rochon, resigned last fall. Matthew Jenkins is acting president.
Katherine Newman, dean of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and a professor of sociology at the Johns Hopkins University, will become provost and senior vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst on August 1. James V. Staros, who has been Amherst’s provost since 2009, said last year that he would leave his post at the end of this academic year.
Guy Bailey, who has been chancellor of the University of Missouri at Kansas City and president of Texas Tech University and the University of Alabama, has been named sole finalist to be founding president of the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley.
Joseph S. Francisco, a professor of earth and atmospheric sciences and chemistry at Purdue University, will become dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln on July 1. The previous dean, David Manderscheid, stepped down last year to become executive dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio State University.
Elizabeth Spiller, an associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Florida State University, will become dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech on July 1.
Gillian Lester, a law professor and acting dean of the University of California at Berkeley’s School of Law, will become dean of Columbia Law School on January 1, 2015. David M. Schizer will step down at the end of the academic year after 10 years as dean, and Robert E. Scott, a professor of law, will serve as interim dean.
Jonathan D. Weinzapfel, a lawyer at Faegre Baker Daniels and a former mayor of Evansville, Ind., will become chancellor of Ivy Tech Community College’s newly merged Southwest and Wabash Valley regions. He will begin on May 12.
Kimberly (Kim) Budil, program manager of the Nuclear Counterterrorism Program in Global Security at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, will become vice president for laboratory management at the University of California on May 1. She will succeed Glenn Mara, who is retiring.
Susan R. Wente, a biomedical scientist who has served as associate vice chancellor for research at Vanderbilt University for the past five years, will become the university’s provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs on July 1. She will succeed Richard McCarty, who is stepping down after six years in the role.
Karla Leeper, vice president for board relations and executive affairs and chief compliance officer at Baylor University, will become chief of staff at Georgia Regents University and the Georgia Regents Health System on June 15.
