U. of Toledo and Evergreen State College Choose New Presidents

TRANSITIONS

Sharon L. Gaber, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Arkansas, has been appointed president of the University of Toledo. She will succeed Lloyd A. Jacobs, who resigned last June and became a fellow at the Council on Competitiveness. Nagi Naganathan, dean of the College of Engineering, has served as interim president.

George Bridges, president of Whitman College and a former dean and vice provost at the University of Washington, will become president of Evergreen State College, in Washington State, in October. Thomas L. (Les) Purce, who has led Evergreen State for almost 15 years, will retire in August.

Ya-Ru Chen, faculty director of China executive-education programs and a professor in the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University, has been named academic dean of China initiatives and will lead the school’s dual-degree program, Cornell-Tsinghua M.B.A./F.M.B.A. The two-year program, to begin in May, will be taught mainly at Tsinghua University, in Beijing.

Andrew L. Sears, who has been dean of computing and information sciences at the Rochester Institute of Technology since 2011, will become dean of the College of Information Sciences and Technology at Pennsylvania State University in July.

John Gregory (Greg) Morrisett, a professor of computer science at Harvard University, will become dean of the Faculty of Computing and Information Science at Cornell University in July. He was on Cornell’s computer-science faculty from 1996 to 2004, the year he joined Harvard.
