Capital campaigns seeking to raise $100-million or more for colleges and universities gathered a total of $1.053-billion in gifts and pledges in the first quarter of the year, according to The Chronicle’s expanded survey of major fund drives on campuses.

Although January was, as usual, a slow month for the campaigns, giving picked up during February and March. March outpaced February in giving by 10 percent.

Out of the 43 institutions that responded to The Chronicle’s survey, 42 are more than halfway toward their goal and five have surpassed it.

The campaign with the biggest gain for the quarter was Pennsylvania State University at University Park, with $78.6-million. Penn State’s campaign raised the most in February and March as well.

Public institutions fared better than private colleges in the quarter. Out of the 10 institutions that raised the most, seven were public entities.

The Chronicle’s survey, which previously covered only billion-dollar campaigns, now includes campaigns of $100-million and up. Colleges mounting drives of that size are welcome to send word of their efforts to data@chronicle.com.

University of California, Berkeley chancellor Dr. Rich Lyons, testifies at a Congressional hearing on antisemitism, in Washington, D.C., U.S., on July 15, 2025. It is the latest in a series of House hearings on antisemitism at the university level, one that critics claim is a convenient way for Republicans to punish universities they consider too liberal or progressive, thereby undermining responses to hate speech and hate crimes.
