As dedicated citizens, we here at The Chronicle are glad to see that our tally of top stories for 2010 indicates that society recognizes the importance of beard science. But as professional journalists, we’re also a little relieved to see that our story about a professor-dominatrix doesn’t appear until No. 6, beat out by some soul-searching about the state of higher education.
Following are the 10 most-viewed articles on The Chronicle’s Web site published in 2010. We expected some of these to do well: the think pieces that got passed around departments (“The Big Lie About the Life of the Mind”), the unique data presentations (the National Research Council’s doctoral-program rankings), and the breaking news that seemed to have everyone talking (“Document Sheds Light on Investigation at Harvard”). Then again, sometimes our hit stories were inexplicable, even to Chronicle staffers (the beards again).
