Students at Warren Wilson College learn firsthand what work adds to the learning environment. One of seven work colleges in the country, the campus, in the Appalachians near Asheville, N.C., is known for its “triad” approach to education — academics with required work and service. The dean of work, Ian Robertson, will retire this spring after 35 years at Warren Wilson. While the triad is not disappearing, the new vision of “applied learning” reflects the college’s belief that students learn not only in the classroom but also in the work environment and through service to the community. The lines between the parts of the triad are often not clear.
