* This institution reported numbers of full-time-equivalent students that varied at least slightly from the figures that were estimated by the U.S. Department of Education for 2016-17 using formulas based on the total number of credit or contact hours of students at the institution. The use of reported rather than estimated figures in the table above accounts for the variations in rankings from those that appeared in the March 15, 2019, print issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Note: Only degree-granting institutions that were classified as doctoral, master’s, or baccalaureate institutions in the 2015 Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education and that had tenure systems in 2016-17 and were eligible to participate in the federal Title IV student financial-aid program were considered for this analysis. Baccalaureate/associate institutions were excluded, as were colleges with fewer than 200 undergraduate students and colleges with no full-time instructional staff members. The number of full-time-equivalent, or FTE, students is the sum of the numbers of full-time equivalent undergraduate, graduate, and full-time-equivalent doctor-of-professional-practice students in the 2016-17 academic year that were reported by the institution. For 107 institutions in this analysis, those numbers differed from the estimated numbers calculated by the U.S. Department of Education using formulas based on the total number of credit or contact hours of students at the institution. Tenured and tenure-track faculty members were counted only if they were full-time instructional-staff members in the fall of 2016. The absence of data is represented with a dash. Institutions are ranked by the lowest to highest number of FTE students per tenured or tenure-track faculty member. The numbers of FTE students per tenured or tenure-track faculty members are rounded, but institutions were ranked before rounding. Tied institutions are listed alphabetically. Questions or comments on the Chronicle List should be sent to Ruth Hammond.

Correction (4/1/2018, 2:15 p.m.): The original version of this table indicated that Saint Joseph’s College, in New York, had the lowest number of full-time-equivalent students per full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty member among four-year private nonprofit institutions. It should have been ranked as No. 212, not No. 1. The college has two campuses, one in Brooklyn and one on Long Island, and it started reporting each campus’s data separately to the National Center for Education Statistics in 2017. The original table divided the number of FTE students at the Brooklyn campus in 2016-17 into the number of tenured or tenure-track full-time instructional staff members on both campuses in the fall of 2016. The ratio has been recalculated using the number of tenured or tenure-track full-time instructional staff members at the Brooklyn campus alone. The Brooklyn campus has 30 tenured faculty members, not 74, and 27 tenure-track members, not 90. The ratio of FTE students to tenured or tenure-track full-time instructional staff members on the Brooklyn campus is 18.0, not 6.3. Yale University is now No. 1 among private nonprofit institutions, and 211 other institutions also moved up one rank. Along with the rankings, the faculty figures and ratio for Saint Joseph’s and the text in the summary at the top of the table have been corrected.

‘I Didn’t Want to Make a Scene’: A Professor Recounts the Conversation That Got Him Ejected From Commencement

From The Review

American artist Andy Warhol, posing in front of The Last Supper, a personal interpretation the American artist gave of Leonardo da Vinci's Il Cenacolo, realized 1986, belonging to a series dedicated to Leonardo's masterpiece set up in palazzo delle Stelline; the work holds the spirit of Warhol's artistic Weltanschauung, demystifying the artwork in order to deprive it of its uniqueness and no repeatibility.
