Which Colleges Have the Highest Number of Managers per 1,000 Students?

By  Chronicle Staff
September 19, 2018

The public college with the most full-time managers per 1,000 unduplicated students in 2015-16 was a small honors college in Florida with plans to grow quickly. The private nonprofit institutions with the most managers per 1,000 students tended to be highly selective. The median number of managers per 1,000 students was twice as high for four-year private nonprofit colleges as it was for four-year public colleges, and the median cost of managers’ salaries per student was nearly twice as high at the nonprofit colleges as at the public ones.

Median for 931 four-year private nonprofit institutions 14.4 $1,275

Note: The definition of managers is based on the “Management Occupations” category of the 2010 Standard Occupational Classification Manual published by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. The bureau generally defines “education administrators, postsecondary” as people who “plan, direct, or coordinate research, instructional, student administration and services, and other educational activities at postsecondary institutions.” On college campuses, “managers” may include such job titles as president, provost, dean, department chair, research director, registrar, director of fund raising, director of student services, facilities managers, and computer and information-systems managers. Medical managers were excluded. Small colleges may appear to have a disproportionately high number of managers because of the number of people who must self-direct their own office operation. The number of managers is for the 2016-17 academic year, but the number of unduplicated students used to calculate the ratio is for the 2015-16 academic year, the latest available. The number of full-time managers per 1,000 unduplicated students was calculated by dividing the number of managers at each institution into the total number of unduplicated undergraduate and graduate students divided by 1,000. The amount spent on managers’ salaries per student was calculated by dividing the total outlay for full-time managers’ salaries at each institution into the total number of unduplicated undergraduate and graduate students over the 12-month period. Only four-year public and private nonprofit degree-granting institutions in the United States that are eligible to participate in federal Title IV financial-aid programs were included in the analysis. Special-focus institutions, such as medical schools, seminaries, and art schools, and colleges with no Carnegie classification were excluded, as were colleges with fewer than 500 students and one college that reported no managers and shut down in 2016. A few institutions classified as four-year institutions primarily offer associate degrees and did not award or offer their first bachelor’s degrees until after 2016. Ratios are rounded, but institutions were ranked before rounding. Ties are listed alphabetically. Questions or comments on the Chronicle List should be sent to Ruth Hammond.

Update (10/2/2018, 11:10 a.m., 1:25 p.m., and 4:00 p.m.): In response to numerous requests from readers, this list has been updated to rank all institutions included in the analysis and not just the ones at the top and the bottom of the list. The note was also expanded to give more detail regarding the definition of managers and the methodology used, and the column headings were revised to indicate that only full-time managers were counted.

Correction (12:07 p.m., 10/4/2018): The original version of this table incorrectly described the number of students used for this calculation as full-time-equivalent students. The count is actually the total unduplicated number of part-time and full-time undergraduate and graduate students over the course of the 2015-16 academic year, which is a larger number.
