A 217,000-square-foot renovation, combined with a 90,000-square-foot expansion, was intended to transform this historic building into a flexible 21st-century research library while providing a sense of unity and clarity to the entire complex and affirming the library’s role as the intellectual and social heart of campus. The library houses more than a million volumes, in addition to special collections. More than 230 computers are available for public use, and wireless Internet access is available throughout. The project added nearly 1,000 seats in settings ranging from traditional reading rooms to casual-seating areas and group-study spaces.
