2 Top Romanian Government Officials Grapple With Charges of Academic Plagiarism

Romanian higher education is under scrutiny after accusations of academic plagiarism have plagued two government officials, reports Nature. Victor Ponta, the country’s prime minister, has been accused of copying large sections of his Ph.D. thesis in law without proper attribution. Last month, Ioan Mang, Romania’s minister of education, resigned after he was accused of copying the academic work of researchers from Japan, Taiwan, and Israel. Nature says the allegations against the prime minister are raising concerns that the government is ill prepared to root out corruption in the higher-education system.
