For students with learning disabilities, laptops are a godsend (“Should Laptops Be Banned in Class? An Op-Ed Fires Up the Debate,” The Chronicle, November 27). When professors ban laptops for students, then those with special permission to use them are now unwillingly identified as students with learning disabilities.
If someone is old enough to vote and attend college, they are old enough to decide if they need or want to use a laptop. Shutting Wi-Fi solves the Facebook issue without going to such extremes. No professor can force anyone to pay attention. If a student isn’t focusing on the lecture, perhaps the problem is the person teaching the class doesn’t have the skill set to retain the student’s attention?
