This summer, the CV Doctor would like to help two candidates with their CV and résumé. Many of you may have been on the academic job market before, and, in uncertain times, you may be widening the range of job possibilities you’re considering. So, we would like to help you understand the differences between these two documents, and how to make them effective for different audiences.
If you are selected, we will give you an initial evaluation of both documents and ask you to make changes. Then we’ll publish the before and after versions, with commentary, on The Chronicle’s Web site. This year we’d like to feature:
· an M.F.A. looking for a faculty position and for an arts administrative position
· a humanities Ph.D. looking at both academic and nonacademic jobs
If you’re interested, we ask you to send an electronic copy of both your CV and your résumé (ideally one that is focused on a specific kind of position) to careertalk@chronicle.com. In addition, send a statement giving us permission to publish your materials on this Web site. We will look only at the materials that come with a permission statement. We cannot promise complete anonymity, but we will change names, contact information, and the names of the institution(s) where you’ve most recently worked or earned a degree. You’ll also need to be willing to revise your documents in a timely fashion.
Please also take the time to write a little bit about yourself in the e-mail message that you send with your documents. We would like to know to which types of institutions you’ll be sending your CV, and which kinds of nonacademic positions you’re interested in. Finally, please be sure to send your documents in a .doc format, rather than .pdf. You will be notified if your CV and résumé are selected for review.
Please send your CV and résumé by Monday, July 9, to careertalk@chronicle.com, in order to be considered.
