The Iowa Review is inviting translation scholars to read and contribute to a new forum on translation now live on the IR website. The first essay on the forum is “Towards a Translation Culture,” a “diagnosis of the profession” written by Lawrence Venuti, a translator and translation theorist who is a professor of English at Temple University.
Venuti considers what translators can learn from editorial rejections, offering a frank appraisal of two incidents in his own experience. “What follows,” he writes, “is not a personal attack on these particular editors, but a critique of current editorial methods and their assumptions about translation. My account, therefore, should not be dismissively reduced to sheer sour grapes. What happened to me can and does happen to many other translators. I have decided to go public in an effort to engage issues that urgently need to be discussed by both translators and readers of translations alike.”
Along with Venuti, the Iowa Review’s editor, Russell Scott Valentino, has also solicited essays from Tim Parks and Luise von Flotow. Valentino was among those profiled last year in “Translators Struggle to Prove Their Bona Fides,” by Chronicle reporter Jennifer Howard.
